Two five year old girls dead from drowning in west Dallas subdivision home

Two five year old girls were discovered dead from drowning in a family pool sometime after 1:30 p.m. today according to Dallas Police Detective Bill Gorman. The tragedy happened as most of the family were off to town on a shopping trip and the two were left with the grandmother of one who is a caregiver.

The two girls were found fully clothed by the ten year-old brother who was part of the family search that commenced when the parents and another brother returned from shopping. The call to 911 came at 1:43, said Dallas Police Detective Bill Gorman, who is investigating the case.

Gorman declined to release the names of the children until tomorrow but said one of the victims was a resident of the home and the other was visiting the family from her home in Gwinnett County.

Gorman said that charges are pending against the grandmother whom he said was talking on the phone for approximately 45 minutes while the two children apparently left an upstairs bedroom where they were playing and ambled outside to the yard where the family had its own pool in the swim-tennis community west of Dallas.

The parents told Gorman that their daughter was a swimmer and could swim the length of the pool. The skill level of the other child was unknown.

Additional information will be available in the morning.

OMG! To many thoughts going through my mind. And one of them not being their child? That is how I'm reading it.

Prayers for all, including the 911 operator and the EMTs and law enforcement personnel who responded. They will tell you that their hardest calls involve children. :(

This breaks my heart!! I happened to be in the ER today with my own daughter getting her stitched up from a fall, when we knew something bad was going on and everyone in the ER started rushing around and came to our room to close the glass door and curtain and asked us to remain in the room. I had overheard a nurse saying something about 2 children and drowning, but I was hoping I heard wrong!!

These are my neighbors, and they need a lot of prayer right now. The 10 year old that found them was in class with my oldest and he loved his little sister so much, he talked about her all the time. She was a sweet little girl who always had a smile on her face. She and my youngest daughter just played 2 days ago and talked about being in kindergarten together. I can't imagine what the families of these girls are going thru. :cray:

I can't stop thinking about this. This is my worst nightmare right now as a parent. We have an alarm on the pool in addition to the lock, but I still wake up in the middle of the night.

My heart goes out to the parents and brother. :(

So sad, as a grandmother myself i constantly worry for my grandchildrens safety. This is more reason for me to teach them how to swim. I know that one of them could swim and there is no way to avoid such a tragedy at times, this just breaks my heart. Prayers for the grandmother, sorry the caps was on. Please everyone keep in mind that as grandparents get older, they also lose thier memory,I have dealt with Dimentia and Alzheimer's in my family.Makes me wonder if the grandmother's mind just got off track for a moment. Prayers for her and the families involved.

I just heard on the radio the caretaker will be charged with reckless conduct. They said that the lady was a live-in house keeper.
Not sure if we have the story right that it was the grandmother or that the radio station does.

According to AJC, the housekeeper was the grandmother to one of the girls who was visiting and the other lived in the house.

I cannot imagine. This is a reminder to me - we just got french doors installed going out to our pool and my two year old granddaughter is coming from out of town to visit in two weeks. She could not open the sliding doors we had, but I just realized I need to install a lock at the top of the french doors where she cannot open them.

My heart goes out to these two families, God bless them both.

BabyB is 13 months, and he can open our French doors. They have the flipper handles. Please don't forget your locks!!

I have french doors too and I chose the keyed locks on both sides, I keep a key in that door at all times and I keep the lock turned just a bit so the door is locked and the GK cannot just pull the key out. Also Lowes sells a alarm that I have installed on my doors, it has a "ding' sound and a all out "alarm sound" you get 2 for 6.00 dollars. these are the best even for napping GK, When they go down for a nap I set it for "ding sound" and that lets me know they are awake. I did all of this child proofing 2 years ago. I have a pond and I just felt I needed to.
