I got an email about a product that contains DMSO that is said to relieve pain. It is rubbed on. The information talked about it being used in sports and horse communities. When I searched at amazon.com different products came up, plus references in books. One book on the subject is DMSO: Nature's Healer by Morton Walker. I do remember hearing some about it before. The reference in the email mentioned a report on 60 Minutes and other research from years ago. I noticed one review at amazon mentioned that there were some cautions in using it. Does anyone know more about it? Here's the link that shows the search results from amazon:

That's the best advice you can get.

DMSO is directly absorbed in to the blood stream.

Years ago, it was used to relieve pain of sore muscles and was
readily available at the drug store.

I don't remember the exact circumstances, but I believe it was removed
because people were getting sick and dying because they would absorb anything
and everything they came in contact with, while using it.

This stuff could get you in trouble (health wise) really quick.

I would suggest not even think about using it before consulting your doctor.

I found this link at Web MD. It contains an overview and also a side effects tab, etc.:

Edited to add: For some reason the link wasn't clickable. Here is a tiny url:

Used it alot in H/S years ago. It was great for sore muscles before pitching or running, you would taste it in your mouth after use. It was for horses but our coaches had it. I imagine like alot of things it has been banned because 3 people had ill effects 25 years ago, all for the better.... :drinks:

Hubby used it years ago when he had chronic chest pain (not heart related). It seemed to help somewhat but neither of us liked for him to use it because of the smell. Seems like when he used it the price was outrageous! This would have been late 1970s and seems like it was something like $50 a bottle that was smaller than 4 oz. He hasn't had any around in YEARS.

I agree with the ones who say stay away from it. It's really an industrial cleaner. Do you REALLY want that on or in you?

This is from the Web MD link I posted. I didn't know about how it's used to treat so many conditions. It's available as a prescription and used in medical settings:

DMSO (DIMETHYLSULFOXIDE) Overview Information

DMSO is a prescription medicine and dietary supplement. It can be taken by mouth, applied to the skin (used topically), or injected into the veins (used intravenously or by IV).

DMSO is taken by mouth, used topically, or given intravenously for the management of amyloidosis and related symptoms. Amyloidosis is a condition in which certain proteins are deposited abnormally in organs and tissues.

DMSO is used topically to decrease pain and speed the healing of wounds, burns, and muscle and skeletal injuries. DMSO is also used topically to treat painful conditions such as headache, inflammation, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe facial pain called tic douloureux. It is used topically for eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and problems with the retina; for foot conditions including bunions, calluses, and fungus on toenails; and for skin conditions including keloid scars and scleroderma. It is sometimes used topically to treat skin and tissue damage caused by chemotherapy when it leaks from the IV that is used to deliver it. DMSO is used either alone or in combination with a drug called idoxuridine to treat pain associated with shingles (herpes zoster infection).

Intravenously, DMSO is used to lower abnormally high blood pressure in the brain. It is also given intravenously to treat bladder infections (interstitial cystitis) and ...

DMSO is an effective paint stripper. It also strips wax off floors, and I have first-hand knowledge of this. :pardon:

Additionally, it eats through nitrile gloves, which are quite commonly used in medical labs and auto repair shops. It causes brain degeneration.

I don't want it anywhere near me. But that's just me. I figure it causes brain degeneration and eats through nitrile gloves, it just MIGHT eat through me, too.

It is interesting how it is used, even intravenously to lower abnormally high blood pressure in the brain. This article mentions the different grades: medical, veterinary and industrial grade:

Uses of DMSO

DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide, a pulp byproduct that is made during the process of converting trees into paper. There are three grades of DMSO; medical grade, veterinary grade and industrial grade. DMSO is usually in liquid form and is closely related to MSM, another pulp byproduct. DMSO is used in both mainstream and alternative health care, as an industrial solvent and in certain biology processes.

Medical Uses of DMSO

In 1961, a doctor at the Oregon Health Sciences University, OHSU, discovered that DMSO penetrated the skin quickly without damaging it. It was later discovered that DMSO could carry other compounds with it through skin and other membranes and its use as a drug delivery tool began. Medical grade DMSO is now commonly mixed with other medications and ...

Certainly can't dispute the fact that it has varied uses. But, I still don't want industrial solvent on or in my body. :pardon:

I had to use DMSO for a joint injury in one of my horses. It actually scarred the skin and created white spots in the hair on my horse's leg. I always made sure to wash my hands thoroughly after applying it.

My mom, a retired microbiologist, believes that one day we will look at chemo as we now view bleeding people with leeches. Not saying it's never good, and not saying I wouldn't do it if recommended (God forbid). But it is a mighty harsh treatment.

Admit impediments. Love is not love

O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

There is actually good science behind bleeding with leeches. The people in the blood bank gave me quite a history lesson on phlebotomy as a medical treatment. Fun fact, President Washington apparently died after being bled TOO much. I guess they didn't have the little bags at that time. ;)
