Fence is down!!
It's every duck for him/herself!!!

They actually doing really well. We left their "shelter" up, so for now they are staying close to it.
They have ventured in to the lake some, but not far.
I figure that will come with time.
Jmatt came over to "get a little action" but he has quickly found facing 5 of them at a time more of a challenge.
So Jmatt is still hanging with the goose-i and coming over occasionally to "try his charms".

Final count:
Largo-hen
Montego-hen
Ming Ming- drake
Taz- drake
Tweety- most likely drake, still not quacking just peeping.
Jmatt- Our big drake
So looks like we coming out with 4 boys and 2 girls. Hope everyone continues to get along as nicely as they are now.

Video below: (3.26 mins long- in case you don't want to invest the time)
Turn your volume on to hear me at my redneck best.

Edited to add- Duck "love" can look, and is a little rough, but it's what ducks do.

We've taken all the fencing down as of now. It's still up in the video. The newbies have a better chance of getting away from him with it down. He's been after them several times throughout the day. The girls should be happy and the boys are probably sodomized.

Poor fella ain't had none in three years! Give him a break!

If I'm lying, I'm dying.
The ducks put themselves to bed tonight.
We have carried them, IN OUR ARMS, from the pen to the garage pen everynight.
So after being free on the lake all day, as soon as it started to get dark, they were waiting outside the basement door!!!!
Papi opened the door, they went right into their inside pen, he closed the door and ducks put up for the night! o_0
Baby steps I guess.............
I can't BELIEVE they put themselves to bed!!!!!
Tomorrow we will open the door and let them out to free range.
I really really hope they learn to stay out all night. Never intended to put them up nightly.

I hope not. We really want them to fend for themselves and become "wild" ducks that get fed corn and peas and cracked corn every night.
They will get used to it. Everyday they will get more confident and explore more of the lake.

I have a friend with a lone male duckling. She wants another male to be his friend. If someone tries to give you another male, please PM me.

Opened up door and everyone happily back out loose on the lake this morning.
We'll see if they come to the basement at dark.
The idea is to get them free range full time!
They CERTAINLY know my dinner call and to come home for dinner!

I worked in the corp office for one of larger Applebee's franchises for a number of years. All the restaurants I worked with were out west...the managers used to call me just to hear me talk...lol. Everyone always said I had to be a GA native (and I am). :drinks:

Ok!!!!!
Well if things don't work out around here, I'll let you know.
Right now, Jmatt is hanging with the Goose-i and leaving them be.
I think he's figured out that 5 were a bit of a match for him.

Does your friend have a lake?

And......they were waiting outside the garage door tonight to come inside.
Sigh.........
I got to somehow get them to stay on lake!!
I had hoped they would learn from Jmatt, but he just wants take hang with his goosey friends!
Open to ideas.
Papi says just leave them out. Which would be fine if they'd stay on water or at least at waters edge!
But I think they will just lay outside garage door making them vulnerable.
Idk.

I'm sure you would hate for anything to happen to them. I'm no expert but it seems to be that if you really want them to stay close to or on the lake, then you can't let them in the garage anymore.

I'm sorry. I know you will worry but maybe it's time.

Good luck! :)

Yeah.
I'm afraid it's going to come to that.
I don't want to TEACH the dogs to chase them, but I want the ducks to be TERRIFIED of the dogs.
Maybe I'll let the dogs wander around down there and to encourage the ducks back out on open water.
Course, as soon as they walk off, the ducks come back.

Gonna have to make a tough choice I think.

Love the video! You guys will figure it out, I have faith in you! Keep posting updates please. I love watching those duckies.

The dog plan may work, it's at least worth a try, Good Luck!

Thanks.
Coco the rotten arse chocolate lab, could really care less about the ducks but here presence scares them to water.
Daisy, the chow-bra-doodle doggie, tries to heard them, which effectively sends them to water.

I do appreciate the support and encouragement.
I keep telling myself, I AM the mamma duck and Papi is the papi duck!
It's up to us to teach them.

Of course, Dos the wild hooded merganser who has adopted us (he's been here going on 3 years) is hanging with the flock.
Maybe he teach them some too.

i just love your updates!! Please continue the saga.

When my son was about 8, we were at a wild game park, and one of the ground critters was "getting it on" with another. Like you say it was "rough". He started screaming and said we have to go get one of the caretakers!! Other guests were quite amused as we tried to explain to him that this is how they "play".

Our basement door.
9pm sharp every night.
What's really fun, is we CARRIED them IN OUR ARMS through the "people door" everynight. They had NEVER actually walked themselves in till now and they are coming to a door they have NEVER (until now) been through!! But some how they KNOW that their pen is right on the other side of the garage door!!! Scott opens up the garage door and they walk right in! Shut up garage door and they are put up for the night!! It's amazing!

Posted Image

Papi's not going to keep doing this though.
I have to make them "wild" ducks or someone convince him to build a duck house.

Went to bed around midnight and the fab 5 were still out on lake huddled together.
So, they were "wild" ducks last night!! YAY!!
This morning Jmatt is over on the dam with the geese and the fab 5 are over in what we call the beach area!

Sometimes, being the mama means having to practice a little tough love.
Ducks did not come to basement door, but they were in back yard, making them vulnerable to predators.
So............I sent in the duck dogs.
Ducks are now back out on open water where they are much safer than on shore for the night.
They probably think I'm a mean mommie.
But that just means I'm doing my job.

Good job mama!!
Yep, you certainly have to practice tough love as a parent, keeps your babies safe, just like you said.
Duck dogs, I love it! lol
Please update us this morning.
There but for the grace of God, go I.

Head count is 6 again this morning.
They've been laying up on the "dam" all day.
My Land Ducks.

Reckon they had enough of the water over night.
Feed them and send them back out on the water again tonight if needed.
The duck dogs are happy to help!

You shall find me waiting for you in the old cemetery, under the shade of the magnolia tree.............

Duckies are good!
Head count six again today!
They are swimming and exploring the lake more but still tend to stay close to home.
And they still Land Ducks!! They tend to walk around the lake rather than swim!!
Today they WALKED all the way around to back side of lake and when I called them for dinner, they WALKED all the way BACK around to home!
My crazy land ducks.

Papi cutting grass right now so they out on lake currently.
