I have heard a rumor (blah blah I know) that I am hoping is just that: a rumor.

I heard that a supply teacher assigned 50 Shades of Gray for Sophomores to read. Somehow this doesn't seem right. (And no, I have no plans to read it)

I'm reading it now and would be OUTRAGED if my high schooler was told by a teacher to read it! My dd will be 18 in August and will be 18 before she reads this book...OMG!

I believe "Shades of Gray" is a garden-variety book whose author has been quite embarrassed at the attention being (mistakenly) given her by people who are reading "Shades of Grey" and thinking OMG what is going on in that household! She lives in FL. I'll see if I can find the story...it was in yesterday's Daily Mail.

And I'm guessing the assignment thingy is a prank. But who knows.

I can not imagine any teacher asking his/her students to read that book. It really does sound like a prank or a disgruntled student or parent trying to "get back" at said teacher.
So you're not from the South, that's okay, you got here as fast as you could.

the fact that this book, and it's 2 sequels, reminds me of why i never have done well with american born women

i just have no interest in being in a bdsm relationship

but considering the sale numbers, a large number of american women desire that, at least in their fantasies

guess i just couldn't fill the role they wanted

Doesnt matter- they are already planning to make a movie out of it- names being tossed around for lead male role...

I ought to clarify that statement- what I mean is..it doesnt matter that we dont want our kids having this as an assigned book because of the eXplicit material within. It is going to be made into a movie, and so the entire thing will become not only water cooler material, but it will be splashed all over all the celebrity magazines at the checkout, there will be a soundtrack made, the morning shows will do interviews with stars, the late night shows will do jokes about the movie ( I am sure they have already done it regarding the book) there will be red carpet events, etc, etc. Kids will get PLENTY of exposure to "50 Shades Of Grey". especially now that its a trilogy, AND the author is, I believe, the one that wrote the Twilight series- so the kids will be pulled right towards it.

The trilogy in question was written by E L James.

The Twilight series was written by Stephenie Meyer
Who is John Gault? - He's the successful business owner who didn't want to play by the new 'Law of the Land' so he closed up shop, packed up his stuff and left. He was joined by many other successful business owners who did the same. They stayed away until the government begged them to return and repealed the law.

No. The author isn't the same. The author of 50 Shades wrote Bella/Edward Fan Fiction. Then she supposedly changed the names and story around just enough to somehow get it picked up by Random House without having the pants sued off her.

It's really not a very good series.
I'm really struggling to get through it but by God I bought it, I'm gonna read it!

I still think IMHO, the women who really really thought this was a great story, must be missing something in their own life.
Having been through a controlling relationship, the story is just a huge turn off to me.

And there's only so many sex scenes you can read before your like "REALLY? AGAIN?? Can I get a little story in here somewhere please?"

I agree. At first, it was fun but the lack of any content as well as the lack of any serious writing talent got on my nerves.
Buy American! We are all in this together so BUY AMERICAN!!!

I haven't read this book, not sure if I will. However, reading the bolded sounds like what Danielle Steele fell into. I used to enjoy her writing, now not so much.

Happy Birthday to all 1973 babies. Tell your mom how much you love her!!!

BUMP
reading this book as a single woman is NOT recommended. Don't even have a boyfriend (haven't found Mr Right yet) at age 53 LOL. I got to the juicy parts and had to put it down, until later maybe.
