MrsSurepip has been doing a great deal more with the plants this year. Between the veggie garden, her herb garden, perennial garden, hibiscus, azaleas, wildflowers, orchids, etc.....well you get my drift. And she is constantly working from the wheelbarrel and a garbage can of good soil.

So, I built her a gardener's workbench or potting bench and it came out wonderful, although it was a bit of an ordeal getting it from the workshop to the garden.

It is a little over 4' wide and 2' deep, 30" workbench surface height with the cement stepping stones under the legs. There are 2 slide in plastic totes under the bench top to collect the soil that falls through the square holes in the worktop, removable from either end.

A 6" deep 4' long shelf is at eye level and has a cedar shake roof over it. For fertilizer, gloves, sevin dust, etc. A plywood back under the shelf will have hooks for her trowels, spades, clippers, etc.

The back side has a 2x8 shelf 4' long for stacking clay pots, etc.
And one end has a pivoting arm and bracket for hanging baskets at an ergonomic work height but where they can hang down without breaking.

The back legs are a 4x6 ripped in half, and the front legs are landscaping timbers. The plastic work top is a piece of poultry breeder house flooring, and the catch boxes for the soil are polyethelene chick boxes with a piece of landscaping fabric in the bottom.

All Polyethelene, cedar, and/or pressure treated pine. It weights about 150-200 pounds. And we have a cement paver under each leg.

Anyone interested in purchasing one of these let me know. Wood cost was reasonable but I had a good solid 20 hours in it.

Jealous yet ?

It is now installed on concrete pavers and am moving her various garden implements and weapons into place. She is tickled with this one.

I don't know if it is worthwhile trying to build these to sell....it was a great deal of work and they would have to sell for $250 to $300.

That is very nice, especially not having to bend over to pot plants, that kills my back.

Another nice job, Surepip

Oh, yeah! I'm jealous. Seriously, that is a beautiful piece of garden furniture, for sure!

No, but you are welcome to get ideas from ours, and I will be happy to supply you some lettuce, arugula and endive sets, as well as parsley, chocolate mint, spearmint, thyme, oregano, marjoram, etc.

I also have some "Sit on the patio" planters, 10" wide, 6" deep, and 4' long, with a pond liner stapled inside. These will last for many years and are fine for growing leafy veggies, peas, herbs, etc.

Surepip - what a wonderful thing you created for your wife.... you guys have such a green thumb.... It gave me some ideas, hubby may have to make me a portable version..... there is always potting soil to clean up somewhere... I love container planters, it avoids digging and running into snakes they are bad this year... I do not like them... I know your garden is doing great, it always is.... we are munching on radishes and awaiting the cabbage to get big enough to eat... I have already gotten a few green beans and me and my grandson are awaiting the sweet green peas....so far our garden is looking beautiful this year, just waiting to see what the weather and the rain will do to it. Thanks for sharing your ideas, you and your wife are truly master gardeners.
