The Federal Department of Justice has reported that one MS Youth facility is managed terribly and is a "cesspool." The private company that took over the facility a year ago is puling out, but will another private operator be able to take over?

The only made 284 million dollars in profits last year, How do you expect them to operate it any better and still make money?

What makes it a cesspool is the sheeze that's in it.

You could say the same about the whole state of Mississippi, couldn't you.

No one is naive enough to believe that the inmates - aged 13-22 - are wonderful people but to suggest that there is not a difference between institutions based on management is absurd. Things are the way they are because management either doesn't care or wants them that way.

Bottom line, your comment is simply glib and indicative of the fact you don't care at all.

What anyone with any sense knows is that recidivism rates are dependent on the quality of management of the institution and poor management will result in an increase in crime over the life of those inmates.

In that context, my opinion is that those who don't care are actually in favor of increased crime and misery.

I was reminded of that when I watched a relatively recent remake of Les Miserables (It is in on demand on Showtime). I remember reading the book as a teen and enjoyed the movie. If you've never had the experience, I would recommend it.

The recidivism rate is 52% in the U.S. Tells me the color tv and air conditioning method ain't working all that great either.

I'm sorry. I forgot I was supposed to give a damn about a bunch of convicts locked away in a Mississippi prison. Oh that's right, I don't.

Here are the only two things I care about. How does the repeat offender percentages compare to government operated facilities? And how does the operating cost compare to government operated facilities? A couple of pieces of info NPR seems to have conveniently left out.

That may be true but that doesn't mean the people in there are not to be protected while in state custody. It also means those people can be even worse when they get out if we allow the worst things to happen to them. The point is that they are still human beings. The things described in the story are things like you hear about in third world prisons, not America.
