Just a heads up: Lice is going around big time in our schools DD came home yesterday with a note saying they found nits. #1: Why was I NOT called immediately? Shouldn't I have had to come get her to clean that crap, #2: She has never had Lice so when we had to put that Shampoo in her hair, lather, rinse, Comb, pull, and wash with regular Shampoo, she cried and this mama about lost it too .
She is a clean child.. bathes everyday and she washes well. How does this happen?
I hope we got it all out.. Them things are SOOOO hard to see
Does anyone know any home remedy type suggestions for keeping these things away or to help treat if they are still there?
My neighbor was told by someone that there is an oil of some kind (Tee Tree maybe ) or something that we could put in her hair and a little in her Shampoo that would keep the bugs from attaching?
Them lice loooove clean hair.....cleanliness has nothing to do with it.If you daughter has nits, that means the lice were there long enough to lay eggs and also hop off and onto the couch, her pillow or anywhere else her head was.
All the literature about head lice says they can't live away from the host for more than 8 hours, don't you believe that......We had to buy new mattress for our youngest daughter.
Yes Tea Tree Oil! I have a friend who raised FIVE kids. She has always put a few drops of it into each new bottle of shampoo and shake it up. The lice hate it for some reason. It is true that anybody can get lice, even if they are a clean person. Lice can jump over FOUR FEET! Tell her not to share combs, brushes or hair accessories.

If you can't get to the store, use mayonaise or some kind of cooking oil. Use dish soap to wash out the oil. Yes, there is a product line that is to help prevent lice. It is "Fairy Tales for Kids", it is white bottle with castle on the front. I know most hair places sell it. Yes, lice love clean hair!!! As a prevention, you could wash her hair with shampoo that has a coconut smell. Lice don't like the coconut.

Sorry your having to deal with that. Here are some helpful hints to prevent re-infestation:
Preventing Reinfestation
Here are some simple ways to get rid of the lice and their eggs, and help prevent a lice reinfestation:
Wash all bed linens and clothing that's been recently worn by anyone in your home who's infested in very hot water (130° F [54.4° C]), then put them in the hot cycle of the dryer for at least 20 minutes.
Have bed linens, clothing, and stuffed animals and plush toys that can't be washed dry-cleaned. Or, put them in airtight bags for 2 weeks.
Vacuum carpets and any upholstered furniture (in your home or car).
Soak hair-care items like combs, barrettes, hair ties or bands, headbands, and brushes in rubbing alcohol or medicated shampoo for 1 hour. You can also wash them in hot water or just throw them away.
Because lice are easily passed from person to person in the same house, bedmates and infested family members will also need treatment to prevent the lice from coming back.
Schools will not notify you unless it is noticed by the nurse. They wont send a letter home bc it is every where. Unless it is a daycare.
It is every where!!! I always search kids hair before they come in my house lol It sounds awful, but I got it last year from kids and it was pure hell. If anyone knows me I have long thick hair. I really brushed my hair with the lice comb and was crying at one point. I had to do this for weeks to get it gone. It was awful. Not to mention you have to wash all the sheets every day especially pillow cases.
My sister then got it and all of her kids. And She either took it to Chicago or they brought it here. It then when to her whole neighborhood.
It was awful. It took me months to get rid of.
PARENTS: One Lice treatment will not make these go away. You HAVE to go buy the comb at Sallys. It is a lice comb. Brush through their hair for weeks. This comb is what gets rid of it. If you do not do this it will stay and continue to pass to the next kid. Divide the hair in sections- brush on top- side ways- hit all angles of the hair. You will be amazed in a bad way of what all comes out. Do this until it is gone.
It is best to keep your girls hair braided or in a ponytail when they go to school.
My sister went to a lice salon. Yes they have lice salons in Chicago. They told her to get this comb and it is the only thing that will actually get rid of it. It will get live lice and nits. It will get it all.
Take all of the brushes, hats, hair bows, etc- put in a freezer bag and leave for 24hrs and it kills them all. You can also stick in the freezer wrapped up. Dont forget your baseball helmets. Wash coats, throws, everything. Yes add tea tree oil to your shampoos. This will also prevent them for going to you. So use it daily.
So many parents will just waste their money on a treatment or 5. These will not get rid of it all.
Teachers at daycare told me 6 months ago it was going around there. And I wanted to cry. Thank god it did not come to our house.

What school does your daughter attend?

My daughter came home with is a couple of months ago. She is a very clean child. They only have you pick them up immediately if they find live ones. The nurse at my daughter's school said to leave her hair dirty for a couple of days and put it in a ponytail to try to keep them from sticking. Unfortunately my daughter has very long thick hair and regular methods did not work. If you try all recommended methods and still have a problem, call your doctor and they can prescibe stronger stuff. It is a pain in the butt, but you have to stick with it.
My dd got it at a birthday party in 1st grade. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! It took an entire day to go through her hair, strand by strand picking the little nits out. Her hair is EXTREMELY thick. I was so paranoid after that, I checked her hair everyday for years. Honest to god when I found out I was having a boy the second time around, one of my thoughts was that if he ever gets lice, all i'll have to do is shave his head! such a relief.
today is tomorrow's yesterday.
If they laugh at you because you're different, laugh at them because they're all the same.
Please tell me what school this is? I have a child starting Kindergarten this fall. I will reconsider if it is where he is zoned? GROSS!
It has absolutely nothing to do with the school - it can and does happen at just about every public and private school at some point. It hit the princess's private preschool last year and was traced back to a very affluent horse stable in Buckhead (one of the kid's borrowed a helmet when she forgot hers). We have managed to miss it so far and it makes my skin crawl to just think about it, but to decide to rezone your kid because of it is just a little over the top.
This is in every school- maybe you could homeschool your child then or better yet you all live in a bubble lmao I just can hope that was a joke and you forgot the jk or smiley
They actually like clean hair so maybe you should go to this school lol

Many, many, many years ago;; when kids were little, we got that same note. I immediately began checking and YEP, all 3 of mine had them. And it was the night before my inlaws were coming to visit from California. I was appalled.
We stayed up half the night. The boys were easy but my daughter had long hair. It took me 4 hours to pick out every little nit from her head; we both cried. That comb was useless on her long hair!.
We were stripping beds, washing everything - frantically trying to erase the fact from our house and telling my in-laws!
Good Luck to you - Unfortunately cleanliness has nothing to do with it! Almost everyone of our neighbors' kids had it. I became the "resident" head checker in our sub division. One day you will look back and laugh and assure your own children that they are not bad parents when their kids get lice.
Miss Sophie it has been 15 years and I still can't laugh, it was a nightmare.
I ended up cutting all 3 of the girls hair, we combed with the steel come every night for weeks. We would sit on the porch I would have them lean back in a chair with a towel under their head, place a dinner plate with Dawn in my lap and comb over the plate to prevent them from getting on me.
When we got rid of them my girls wore gel or hairspray every day to school.
Hair dye and perm lotion will also kill the eggs and keep them from hatching if you can't get all the nits out by comb. If you child has a thin hair shaft it can be very hard to get the nits off.
It was gross and it does make you feel dirty when you are dealing with them.
The worse thing is kids whose parents don't do a thorough job and your kids get reinfected. That is why we started with the gel and hairspray to prevent reinfection.
