Are elementary students too young to even be taught something as horrible as slavery in America and the Holocaust? Maybe it should be left until Middle School where there are separate history classes.

I actually agree with this, kids are pushed to grasp concepts before they have mastered the basics. In my opinion this is why kids get left behind. 4 years of the basics bored or not after that they will excel at what they are suited to when you go to the next level. I think we are creating social division the way we are doing it now.
Every person is important to society. I think a good grasp of the basics enforces that on every level.
I know that I need a lot of people that are either better at, or willing to do things that I can't.
I think teaching in our diverse society is harder than it has ever been, I always try to be supportive of educators, they are not allowed to be diverse in their methods and I think that it is wasteful of their talents.

So why is everyone so caught up in how "terrible" slavery in America was and very seldom is anything said about The Trail of Tears? Is it because the North American Indian isn't trying to collect on their past?
Maybe poker's just not your game Ike. I know! Let's have a spelling contest!

I'll have you know there's a huge difference between slavery and wanton needless slaughter of an entire culture of folks.
Only one of those ruined an entire race and culture forever, and we celebrate their history once a month.
The other doesn't even compare obviously, DUH.
Sometimes in our senior years the first things to go are bladder control and the filter on our political bent.
Stop bringing current political and social events into my insular little world. You're harshing my escapism mellow.

Still recovering from a long day yesterday. Will you explain your statement?

What if the question had been more wordy....with a story...

For example:
According to the 3/5 compromise, slaves would count as a partial person towards the population of a state for legistlative purposes. If Farmer John has 100 slaves, what's the value of his slaves for representation purposes?

vs

A plantation owner had 100 slaves. If three-fifths of them are counted for representation, how many slaves will be counted?

Also, what if this was a class starter in a history class (history integrating math) rather than a math class (math integrating history)?

(clearly, my history skills are lacking and someone more familiar with the concept could write a better question.)
