Son has gotten more ATM fees than I would like to pay. Does anyone know of a bank w/ a really good checking account for college students?

my son just got an acount at United Community Bank, he didn't order checks and only has a debit card. If the money isn't there he can't spend it. It's a free account and I don't have to worry about NSF fees.

KSU fees are insane. Posted Image

I use Family Savings Credit Union, and they have Visa backed Debit cards. I've yet to run into anywhere that I have to use an ATM, unless it's cash only.
Also, you can do 'banking' at any credit union that's a part of the Georgia system (and there's one close to both West Ga, and across the street from KSU, if your son goes to either of those).

we use Ally Bank....you can use any ATM with no fees...they send you checks to you. Only thing some may not like is that there isn't a local branch. We've been with them awhile...best rates and service anywhere..

The VERY BEST THING you can do is to TEACH your child how to handle ANY checking account and to mange their money. Not look for ways to avoid the issue.

Is there a specific reason for using the ATM over just using a debit card?

This is easy.

Stop using the ATM card.

I got rid of mine during my sophomore year of college at Emory. 20 years later and I still have no need for one.

Two 20's, a credit card (with automated payment), and a visit to the student credit union every once in a blue moon is all he will ever need.

Good luck!
