I belong to Anytime Fitness(they are everywhere. Theres one in Kennesaw)and it is the most comfortable gym I've ever been to. Now, I go to the one here in Valdosta and it is the same way. I really enjoy going. I've made friends there that are elderly and gray and a couple that are morbidly overweight and there to change their lives. Its not a beauty pageant.
Let me add this...I bet youll start feeling very comfortable once you go a few times. I was not so sure when I moved to the gym here b/c there ARE the typical gym rats that are there everyday. But, after I went 3-4 times and started to see the real people like myself there for the same reason as I was, I felt totally fine with it. We "normal" people outnumber the overly tanned gym rats anyway.

Thanks, that does make me feel better. I work downtown but live off 61 in Dallas near the Hiram Suide intersection. There is one where the Food Lion was and I thought about stopping by to see what it is like.

There used to be one on MacLand at Hwy 92 in Dallas in the small strip where the beauty school is.

I have another suggestion for you:
Wherever you end up, sign up for a class first! I don't know about you, but I've always found it easier to commit to a class than to commit to myself.

I go there. It kicked my butt today! I go 4 days a week. I do the Sh'Bam, Zumba, Bodyflow. I tried the step but I have to work up to that class. I caught myself starting to cry last week and left straight after class. I don't know what came over me. I felt like a jerk.

Anytime Fitness on 278 will give you a free one day trial.
I still like the idea of Curves. There is one in Villa Rica, and they just emailed me a free 7 day trial. I can email you the trial pass if you want it (just PM me). I am more comfortable at Curves where it's all women. I wish the one in Dallas was still open.

Really ticks me off if I ever see a person looking totally scared and intimidated who got dressed, paid money and got themselves there only to be made to feel like a loser before they even start.

I can concur.
There is a lot of "older" people in the gym in the mornings along with a "younger" group such as myself.
Everyone basically does their own thing but the environment is friendly and you usually see the same people everyday which makes it more comfortable.

I agree.. i use to go in the mornings, same place... and everyone does there own thing... to the OP just remember you are there for YOU... not a fashion show, go comfortable in what you wear... and pretend you are in the only one there....

I LOVE InTune Fitness Studio at Macland and 92.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you have to be in a class at this particular place or
can you just go in as a single and go it alone.?
That is what I would like...to use a recumbent bike..all
by myself a few times a week .
That place is not too far from where I live in Hiram.
I didn't even realize there was a fitness center there.
All those times Ive stopped at the red light and not been observant !!

There is something about working out that gives you a release. It puts my emotions in check and aids me in self control....less road rage! I took a few weeks off, so I have to work my way back up to step class too....it's a booty kicker. I could see my body change shape, along with my attitude, but I didn't drop a pants size until I changed my diet.

The studio is on 92, a little closer to 278 from Macland Rd. There are no bikes or treadmills, only classes. I was never much into doing classes, but I gave it a try and I really enjoy it. The instructors are so nice, personable, and encouraging that working out is like going to hang out with your friends. A lot of the classes are dancing, and no rhythm is required. All ages, skill levels, shapes, and sizes are represented in every class. This is the ONLY gym I have ever been to where I didn't judged!

It is hard for me, I work it hard so I can drop some weight. Some things I can't do just yet, so I replace a step with something else. I know I sweat hard, but I get discouraged because it seems nothing is coming off quick enough for me. Which I know it won't. As for road rage, I get that way when I'm behind someone that feels the need to look at every single blade of grass as they pass a house or business. Another words, I get very irritated on slow drivers.
As for the instructors, I like a few of them, some are funny, like when they are teaching Zumba, they are going to break out in belly dancing. lol. I know a few people that go there I've known for years but the majority of the people I don't know, so it's taking me a minute to warm up to anyone. I'm one of those people that have to be around people and watch before I warm up to them. I've been working out since January and only lost 8 pounds. I'm just not getting it. I'm eating different and working out 2 times a day.

I can identify for sure. I drive from Lowery Blvd in Atlanta to Dallas every day and I get behind some real slow nuts...and see more on I-20 that drive way to fast. I need to find something to fill the smoking void quick. Already to heavy without eating more.

I need to use a recumbent bike...cannot do dancing because I have a small
tear in the meniscus tendon in my knee.
ANY pivoting or twisting motions etc or dancing etc....will rip it further.
I have babied this for the last 4 years and not made it any worse.
I walk twice a day with my dog.. but DR said if I could get some time in on a recumbent bike it might help with losing weight faster...
.NO ..I can't walk faster..IM almost 63 years old.
