I am the same way about gyms. I have been a member of a few thru the years and have never wanted the "meat market", dating-scene gym.

I belong to Anytime Fitness(they are everywhere. Theres one in Kennesaw)and it is the most comfortable gym I've ever been to. Now, I go to the one here in Valdosta and it is the same way. I really enjoy going. I've made friends there that are elderly and gray and a couple that are morbidly overweight and there to change their lives. Its not a beauty pageant.

Let me add this...I bet youll start feeling very comfortable once you go a few times. I was not so sure when I moved to the gym here b/c there ARE the typical gym rats that are there everyday. But, after I went 3-4 times and started to see the real people like myself there for the same reason as I was, I felt totally fine with it. We "normal" people outnumber the overly tanned gym rats anyway.

Thanks, that does make me feel better. I work downtown but live off 61 in Dallas near the Hiram Suide intersection. There is one where the Food Lion was and I thought about stopping by to see what it is like.

My mother and one of her friends went to Curves for a time and liked it a lot. They said it was geared more for older women and they felt comfortable there.

There used to be one on MacLand at Hwy 92 in Dallas in the small strip where the beauty school is.

I like xtreme fitness on Hiram Sudie and 92. There is another one beside Family Dollar on Ridge Road that would be convient for you. It's open 24hrs

Good point on the 24 hours. Not that I'll ever be there at 3 am but it is really nice that you have the option to go anytime. We even worked out on Thanksgiving Day last year(mainly bc we didnt want to get out of the habit)and even though it was a holiday and basically was empty, we had NO reason(excuse :pardon: ) not to go.

I have another suggestion for you:

Wherever you end up, sign up for a class first! I don't know about you, but I've always found it easier to commit to a class than to commit to myself. The one time I stuck to an exercise regimen, it was due to a community school 'gentle' aerobics class.

Great point and it also will help you feel less intimidated in the open workout areas once you take a class.

Workout Anytime at the end of East Paulding have older people that go in the mornings. The younger crowd goes in the afternoon. In the mornings, no one pays attention to you, they are doing there own thing.

I'm gonna probably join with xTreme fitness on Hiram-Sudie. It's small, so no big bar-bell boys in there to ogle me. Cheap too

I LOVE InTune Fitness Studio at Macland and 92. Its group classes like Zumba, Body Attack, and Step. There are no judgements at this studio. All the instructors are encouraging, and the majority of them were unhealthy, but they changed their lifestyle and are in super shape. They will all share their weight loss journey with you. I cried at many workouts when I first started working out, but they encoraged me and I got stronger every day!

I go there. It kicked my butt today! I go 4 days a week. I do the Sh'Bam, Zumba, Bodyflow. I tried the step but I have to work up to that class. I caught myself starting to cry last week and left straight after class. I don't know what came over me. I felt like a jerk.

Most of the gyms around here will give you a free trial period first. You should use the trial to make sure that you feel comfortable in the gym. My hubby and I were interested in joining a gym, so he spoke with Xtreme Fitness because it's the closest gym with the least amount of people. They let us "try" the gym for one month for $30 for both. So we paid $15/month for each. I liked that the gym was never crowded. I'm too embarrassed to work out with alot of people around.

Anytime Fitness on 278 will give you a free one day trial.

I still like the idea of Curves. There is one in Villa Rica, and they just emailed me a free 7 day trial. I can email you the trial pass if you want it (just PM me). I am more comfortable at Curves where it's all women. I wish the one in Dallas was still open.

Wow! That is awesome and great to hear! I get on my soapbox about gyms that make you feel totally intimidated and feel like a dating meat market. I hate those. I think they cause so many people to stay unhealthy and I dont blame them at ALL for not wanting to go inside and workout on machines theyve never seen, excercises they have no idea how to do correctly, etc.

Really ticks me off if I ever see a person looking totally scared and intimidated who got dressed, paid money and got themselves there only to be made to feel like a loser before they even start.

I can concur.

There is a lot of "older" people in the gym in the mornings along with a "younger" group such as myself. ;)

Everyone basically does their own thing but the environment is friendly and you usually see the same people everyday which makes it more comfortable.

There are a group of older ladies that meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at the book store in Hiram to do tai chi. It's a low impact exercise that helps with your balance and flexibility. They meet at 7:00 pm and there is no charge. I'm sure they would welcome you to the group if you would like to give it a try. You can practice this at home in between meetings and I'm sure if it goes over well, they may start to meet more frequently.

That Curves has been gone for a while. The one on Merchant's Drive (next to Tequila's) has been gone for 4 years or so.

I LOVE InTune Fitness Studio at Macland and 92.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have to be in a class at this particular place or
can you just go in as a single and go it alone.?
That is what I would like...to use a recumbent bike..all
by myself a few times a week .
That place is not too far from where I live in Hiram.
I didn't even realize there was a fitness center there.
All those times Ive stopped at the red light and not been observant !!

There is something about working out that gives you a release. It puts my emotions in check and aids me in self control....less road rage! I took a few weeks off, so I have to work my way back up to step class too....it's a booty kicker. I could see my body change shape, along with my attitude, but I didn't drop a pants size until I changed my diet.

The studio is on 92, a little closer to 278 from Macland Rd. There are no bikes or treadmills, only classes. I was never much into doing classes, but I gave it a try and I really enjoy it. The instructors are so nice, personable, and encouraging that working out is like going to hang out with your friends. A lot of the classes are dancing, and no rhythm is required. All ages, skill levels, shapes, and sizes are represented in every class. This is the ONLY gym I have ever been to where I didn't judged!

It is hard for me, I work it hard so I can drop some weight. Some things I can't do just yet, so I replace a step with something else. I know I sweat hard, but I get discouraged because it seems nothing is coming off quick enough for me. Which I know it won't. As for road rage, I get that way when I'm behind someone that feels the need to look at every single blade of grass as they pass a house or business. Another words, I get very irritated on slow drivers.
As for the instructors, I like a few of them, some are funny, like when they are teaching Zumba, they are going to break out in belly dancing. lol. I know a few people that go there I've known for years but the majority of the people I don't know, so it's taking me a minute to warm up to anyone. I'm one of those people that have to be around people and watch before I warm up to them. I've been working out since January and only lost 8 pounds. I'm just not getting it. I'm eating different and working out 2 times a day.

I can identify for sure. I drive from Lowery Blvd in Atlanta to Dallas every day and I get behind some real slow nuts...and see more on I-20 that drive way to fast. I need to find something to fill the smoking void quick. Already to heavy without eating more.

I'm gonna probably join with xTreme fitness on Hiram-Sudie. It's small, so no big bar-bell boys in there to ogle me. Cheap too

My daughter went there until she started college. The college has a gym so she uses it now. But She Loved Xtreme Fitness. I have several friends that go there. They all love it. It is clean and the environment is friendly. The owner was really nice too. I this it is locally owned as well.

Does anyone have a sugguestion for a gym for an out of shape ex-smoker? LOL...ready to go but don't want to feel silly.

I would suggest the 'Y'. We go to the one in the Brookstone area. Family oriented. Good luck and glad to hear you want to stay healthy and fit.

Thanks for answering .about IN TUNE FITNESS STUDIO...having only classes..

I need to use a recumbent bike...cannot do dancing because I have a small
tear in the meniscus tendon in my knee.
ANY pivoting or twisting motions etc or dancing etc....will rip it further.

I have babied this for the last 4 years and not made it any worse.
I walk twice a day with my dog.. but DR said if I could get some time in on a recumbent bike it might help with losing weight faster...

.NO ..I can't walk faster..IM almost 63 years old.

BodyPlex on 278 has a class just for seniors. Silver Sneakers on MWF at 10:45 am. I see lots of the participants on the treadmills and elipticals before or after the class.

I love Gold's Gym on Hospital Drive in D'ville and I'm definitely and out-of-shape older woman. There is such a huge variety of people there you just blend in with the crowd. There is also a women only room and several smaller areas that keep you somewhat isolated. Love the steam room and whirlpool there!
