According to the ad in todays paper, Aldi will be opening on Thursday, March 8. Woohoo! I'm very interested in seeing what they have, I've never been there.

Don't forget to take quarters to pay for your shopping cart.

Just happens to be on DH day off so we'll stop by!! We go to the one in Acworth when are in the area. Some folks might not be impressed but the concept is successful. You have to bag your own groceries so take bags/boxes or you can purchase the ALDI reusable bags for $.10. You do have to put a quarter in the cart to use it but you get the quarter back when you return the cart to it's appropriate place. Therefore no payroll for guys to bag your groceries nor gather carts in the parking lot. Cuts expenses/cuts prices. They do not carry name brands - HOWEVER - they have contracts with many of the name brand companies to produce their merchandise. Same food, different label, another saving. ;)

They have a lot of items that are exclusive to them that we actually go just to get. For instance, they have some of the best marinades for meats & veggies.

It isn't for everyone but we enjoy shopping there AND SAVING MONEY!!! We're looking forward to having one so convenient.

My daughter bought some barbecue sauce there that was by far the best I had ever tasted. Much, much better than any of the national brands.

If I'm not mistaken, when Cub Foods came to Atlanta, you had to bag your own groceries there too.

I stopped at the one on Roswell Rd, it was the first time I've gone to Aldi. It was the same type of store as Sav-a-Lot.
I fantasize about my dogs having jobs. I pretend that both of them are window cleaners and their kennel is their first starter home. I think the bigger dog is trying to bump off the smaller dog so he can have the kennel to himself. I know I have a problem, but don't animals have to earn a living too?

Dogs may not be our whole lives, but they make our lives whole.

A dog is not "almost human" and I know of no greater insult to the canine race than to describe it as such.

The more I see of humans, the more I admire dogs.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

The dog is a gentleman, I hope to go to his heaven, not man's.

Frankly, I don't care what it's like. It's at least an alternative to Kroger and Publix, the only two grocery stores convenient to me. Food Depot is about 5 miles away and it's OK but not my first choice.

I love Aldi and have been shopping with them for years. I find it funny those who hate on them but I really don't mind because you wont be in the way as I check out. LOL

But really it is not a bad company and I save a ton of hard earned cash shopping with them.

I have never been in one, do you find them cheaper than buy one get one deals? I tend to buy most all of our stuff that way and get enough to last until the next time. We don't even buy store brands because they are more expensive than BOGO deals.... I will have to check it out though....

Here is a link to their local ad. Look to the left and click on a dept. like produce to see what the specials are:

For anyone interested here's a blog that talks about buying Gluten Free items at Aldi:

HAHAHAHA! I love that!!!!! I'm very interested in trying them, I liked the prices I saw for produce in the paper today. And I am a firm believer that 'off' brands are not 'off' at all, just name brands in a plain box.

I haven't looked at the newspaper today. Are the produce prices the same as the online ad? The online ad for the Douglasville store has strawberries for .79 a package and navel oranges for $1.49 for a 4lb. bag plus several other good buys.

Not really. You will find that their produce is a VERY GOOD PRICE. I venture to the one behind Cumberland at least once a week and pick up bell peppers and such. I have getting the 3 pack of colored peppers for less than $2.00!!!

Does anyone know how much of their produce comes from the USA?

Do they have anything that is organic?

I don't see Paulding County getting a Whole Foods anytime soon - we're not exactly the demographic they're looking for. :p

That's very true. Sad, but true.

I live in southwest Cobb. We get N-O-T-H-I-N-G. Well, maybe a lot of thrift stores. :pardon:

I think it's the same one, pineapples were .99 cents each.

I got out my AJC and looked at the ad after posting.

On the back of the ad there is a coupon for $5 off a minimum purchase of $30 at the Hiram store. Limit one per family.

They use quite a few local farmers. This keeps money in our community. That is why they usually only have the produce in season and variety varies. I bought the BEST greek dressing there a few weeks ago, I hope they have it at the new one!

Aldi and Trader Joe's are owned by the same German based company........I'm not always thrilled with K or P, but, I try my darndest to shop American. I have been to the Aldi in Acworth....was convinced by a frugal friend to try it multiple times after it opened. There were a couple of things I liked, but, I ended up having to go to other stores to buy things Aldi didn't carry. Also, so much of the foods were from other countries. I know the other stores also offer items from other countries and some produce cannot be found in the US, but, I still have a thing about supporting US when at all possible.

I just stopped at the Smyrna store and got a couple packs of the strawberries--they look really good!! Peppers have gone up to $2.99--but still a good deal and look good also.

And be sure to take your own bags. I usually take one of those reusable bags and just use it to put my stuff in while shopping. I never buy enough to use (and pay for) a cart.

You do know you don't actually "pay" for the cart, right?

I know some urban stores (and many European) have a rental+deposit that you get back when you return the cart to the kiosk inside the store when you're done. But that's not isolated to Aldi stores.
Sometimes in our senior years the first things to go are bladder control and the filter on our political bent.
Stop bringing current political and social events into my insular little world. You're harshing my escapism mellow.

At Aldi, you pay a quarter to "unlock" the cart. When you return the cart and relock it, you get your quarter back.

I think it's a great idea. People are given incentive to take the cart back to the cart holder instead of leaving it out in the parking lot where it gets in the way and someone has to go and collect it.

It is a great idea. I've seen either a Publix or Kroger in town Atlanta that had that. And had friends that lived in England who would use the cart to take their shopping to their flat then walk back later that evening with the cart to return it to the store to get their deposit back.

They do not carry name brands - HOWEVER - they have contracts with many of the name brand companies to produce their merchandise.

We had a very old Aldi back in my town in New York State.
Their produce was never fresh...
I used to go for the holidays to get all my baking supplies..at much cheaper prices..
and snacks for road trips in the summer etc.

It was an old store....not well stocked.

Im looking forward to THIS brand new one here in Hiram...for one reason..we live
literally..right around the corner on Poplar Springs Road..so it will be extremely convenient
for us !!

I believe this is how most stores contract their instore brands. Not all beans can be a Bush's Baked bean, but they have no problems cooking and canning up the second run quality beans and shipping them in bulk to the store distributors to be labeled and sold as store brands. Walmart is known to be cut-throat at this making manufacturers compete against themselves under the great value brand in order to just get their products on the shelves. I mean if you ever shopped at the "Beast" you've had that moment when you're standing in the aisle going "#$%@@!!! Where did that *product I like* go?? They used to carry it just 2 weeks ago!!! Arrgh!". That's because Walmart will churn your butt right off the shelves, for many reasons, but one of the main being that they'll pull products where the manufacturers won't compete with themselves.

I've never shopped at Aldi so seeing that everything is under an Aldi label at the stores?
And I assume it's actual name brand quality?
