Question? How does the No Pass No Play rule work for high school students in Georgia? Does it mean if a student fails 1 class he/she can not participate or is it the GPA for all classes combined? Just curious- I know how the coach's are doing it at SPHS but don't know if it is really correct and haven't been able to google the answer.

I don't know how it is now, but when my son was in high school, the grades were not averaged together. One failing class and you were out. After they started the No Pass No Play rule, the kids couldn't even be in a club, much less participate in sports.

from the policy;

C. Individual Coach's Rules: Coaches may establish rules and regulations with the
approval of the athletic director and principal for their respective activities. These rules,
as pertaining to a particular activity, must be given by the coach to all team members and
explained fully at the start of the season. Penalties for violation of team rules will be in
writing and shall be administered by the coach. Copies of all additional team rules by
coaches are on file in the athletic office of the respective high school.

I have been under the impression the coach can establish stricter rules if he/she chooses. But they must abide by the county rules at bare minimum.

I was under the impression it was 2 failing grades and it is administered at the beginning of the semester. If the student has two failing grades at the beginning of the semester they are not able to participate in sports for that semester. I may be wrong but that is how it was explained to us. I don't think the rule is being applied, because I know half of the football team that was failing 2,3,4 classes and still played in the games. So why even have it?

And may I add that even if they are failing classes, they can do recovery or make up before game day to get their grades up. So it's useless!!

Well thank you all for your replies. Still unsure of exactly what the correct answer should be. Even a call to the BOA today and no one there could answer my question. I suppose it is whatever each individual coach decides. For us: 1 child was benched in band for 1 failing grade; 1 child was allowed to play with 2 failing grades during one semester and 1 failing grade in another semester. When we asked child number 2 why they were still allowed to play we were told they did grades by GPA not individual grades. That was NOT the case with child #1. As for hubby and I- we both feel that if you are failing you should NOT be playing; however since baby momma has joint custody and insists on he being allowed to play sports we feel we have our hands tied.
Just thought someone might could shed some light on what the actual rule states.

Wish I could help you out, but we were told one F they could still play, two F's and they couldnt. So it must just depend on the coach. And im pretty sure who it is has an impact as well, star athlete still get's to play, bench warmer doesnt.
