My son went to Baggett. I never had any issues. My son has an IEP file and he got all the help he needed from the teachers there. I was pleased with the teachers and staff. As far as Dobbins goes I can not stand the principal there!! I had some issues with some teachers as well. The principal at Dobbins runs his like a boot camp! The maral when you walk in is very stuffy to me. My son goes to Austin Middle School now. Thats the best move I could have ever done. Everyone at Austin is very polite, eagar to assit you or your student in any way they can! Everyone just seems to be so up beat and happy! You will never see this at Dobbins. Honestly to me its like night and Day. This is just my opinion.

I have a child at Dobbins. We like it there alot. My oldest is now a sophomore at Hiram High and went through Dobbins. Please feel free to ask away. Baggett is the elementary school that is almost exactly across the street from Dobbins Middle school. A friend's wife is the Assistant principal there.

School choice is state law. There has to be room in the school for your child. Both of my kids were school choiced through elementary. They both have gone in district for middle school (at Dobbins) and oldest is school choiced to Hiram and the youngest will be.

It's funny - because that's exactly why alot of folks LIKE Dobbins. Dr. Ross is a no nonsense principal. They are there to learn and not to goof around. He's definitely not warm and fuzzy, but he's very effective. I truly believe that with that age group - they don't need warm and fuzzy as they are learning to be manipulative and indepedent (this includes my own children). I've never had an issue with any of the teachers and actually truly believe that they have some of the best teachers there. But, I'll be honest, if your child is on an IEP, then we've probably had a different set of teachers.

Your right Ross is not warm and fuzzy. I agree at this age the students do not need that either. But there is a huge diff. from Dobbins to Austin. The atmosphere is like night and day. I have 2 other children that went to Dobbins as well that did not have an IEP. Matter a fact one was in advance classes. I have a problem when a Principal calls a meeting and is not even aware who my child is and does not understand some of his accomidation. It doesn't say much about a principal when he is not aware the child has an IEP when he calls the meeting! One would think that that he would have known this. Unfortunely a teacher at the meeting had to make Ross aware of this. After we sat at a table with teachers, Ross, nyself and my student and was belittled. Nope sorry I have no respect for someone that does not even have all the facts before callinfg a meeting. There are some goos teachers there. Matter a fact my sons tutor is a teacher there. There are also teachers there that should really rethink there career path. I do understand that is with any job, and at other schools as well. Lets just say I took my situation to the Board and we will just say it turned out in my favor. We have since moved and Im just saying being that I have 3 children that have gone to Dobbins (2 have graduated) this is jut 1 of the issues I have had with the school. Austin is just so up beat and everyone is happy and willing to help. At Dobbins its not that way. (my opinion) Its like night and day. I would have never known this until we moved. Even the Atmosphere at Hiram High School is better than Dobbins. (again my opinion)

My youngest daughter went 3 years at Dobbins,I have 3 grandchildren who go there. I think the way our youth acts today, a little boot camp doesn't hurt. As strict as the principle is, there are still major issues in the way some of the student act. What exactly would you call a good principle?

I'm sorry that you haven't had the best experience. Obviously my experience has been very different. Whenever we have had issues - he has addressed them quickly and definitively. When we have asked for accommodation for my artistic child, we have received them. I don't think that he's the only person in the world that, when embarassed, doesn't react perhaps the way we all would like. But, at the end of the day, you have gotten your situation taken care of. Just remember that your's isn't the only situation.

And, I've heard from folks at Austin, both inside the school and with kids there, that all's not completely well there either. The fact is that every school has its pluses and minuses.

That's why I'm such a big believer in school choice. Your family is a perfect example of why we should have school choice. Dobbins wasn't the best fit for you and your family.

Thanks for all the info. I think Im going to School Choice my youngest to Hiram as I liked that school when my oldest went there. My oldest has problems with reading and she is in intervention. In the town we live in the 6th grade is still elementary and 7th starts high school.
