yea, I love those 2 weeks. I'm displeased.
If they laugh at you because you're different, laugh at them because they're all the same.

I don't like the Aug 1st start date, but I can see why it is. They are trying to keep it so when the kids leave for Christmas break, they are done with that semester. This also allows for any High School students that are graduating early, to enroll in college classes that will begin in January. Also makes it easier when kids come back from break, it's a new semester. There are 85 instructional days in both semesters. Even if they took out the september break, that would only delay the start date by a week, I don't see any difference in Aug 1st or Aug 8th start day, so might as well leave the Sept break in the calender.
Personally, I wish it would just start after labor day and end in June, But I do understand why it is the way it is.

Even IF they took away the September break AND thanksgiving break....that's only a 2 week later start date.
Their entire purpose of starting earlier is to be DONE with the semester when they leave for Christmas Break. Now, if they didn't care if the semester ended in the middle or end of January, there would be NO issue. And this is mainly for the High School students that are going into college.
My kids enjoy the breaks and it allows familys to take vacations during NON PEAK seasons, without the kids missing school.
There are Pro's and Con's to both sides.

Also, it's interesting that we're losing the early release days. I thought those were a part of our "needs improvement" status? Of course, if they're consolidated, it's about one day worth of training.

Me too. I love all the breaks because surrounding counties don't share many of them, we can do things like go to Tellus, the Aquarium and other attractions without having every other kid in the state there as well.

Is that really the point? Would you leave your dog in a car in the summer for ten minutes before it moves with the windows cracked?
The point is, IF they want to do this earlier and earlier, isn't the argument more of "when is ventilation going to be put in?"

It gives us a ton of breaks. We are not able to go on vacation during the summer due to my husband's job, so this gives us a chance to go during the breaks
Next year will be our last year worrying about the calender... it will be bitter sweet

Maybe this many teacher work days means we will be getting back our 5 furlough ( adjusted work schedule) days.

yes, it has the appearance of being shorter, but it's still 9 school days off, instead of 10. I had to count the days when I looked at it the first time to be sure.

So, if they changed it to what the other poster said, it would be more like real life?
Except in real life you don't get two months off for summer.
In South FL. way back in the old days, we started school the last week in August.
We had labor day off.
We didn't have any more breaks until, The Wednesday before Thanksgiving ( yes we went to school on Monday and Tuesday.)
We got Veterans day off too.
We started CHRISTMAS break the Friday closest to CHRISTMAS day.
We went back to school on January 2nd or so.
Then one week for EASTER break.
Off for Memorial day. We even knew exactly what the day was for.
Then we got out the first week of June.
Funny thing is we had all that, and when we left school we knew how to read, write, and do arithmetic.
Happy Birthday to all 1973 babies. Tell your mom how much you love her!!!

The world has changed since you were in school....and even in the decade (or more) since I've been there.
Why should we do things the way it has always been done, except for the sake of doing it the same way?
180 school days = 180 school days whether there are frequent breaks or an early/late start date. There will still be the same number of weekends and the same number of off days.
Oh, and if kids leave school not knowing reading, writing, and arithmetic someone other than the school system should share the blame.

Ok, but WTH did you mean by this?

There are kids that have always wanted to go into the military. After all where else can you get paid to learn a skill while serving your country? Oh, lets not forget about those educational benefits. I mean really why is the military a bad thing?
Truthfully how ever the calendar is doesn't matter to me. DS is involved in sports, and that is what our schedule goes by.

You know if we didn't have all these weeks off, the students might retain what they do learn. Every time we have a break, the teachers have to go back and reteach.
