I saw this listed in a seed catalog, but it's unavailable from them for 2012.

Has anyone grown it? One source says its good for juicing.

Can you imagine one carrot weighing over a pound?

This description is from the Nature Hills Nursery website. They are out of stock for the Oxheart carrot seed. I had never heard of using the green tops in cut floral arrangements before:

Product Description:

The Oxheart Heirloom Carrot was introduced from France prior to 1884 and are often hard to find. This carrot is uniquely shaped, short, very thick and is 5-6" deep by 3-4" in diameter, and grows over 1 pound very rapidly. It has excellent quality for a large carrot and stores very well; an excellent juicer. Oxheart thrives in heavy soil. Carrots are a cool season vegetable, but soil temperatures must be at least 40 degrees F., and the newly sprouted seeds must not be allowed to dry out. It often takes up to 2 weeks to germinate, and they must be kept moist. Early thinning and weeding are a must! Carrots do better on light, sandy or silty loams and do not require high fertility. They are sweeter when harvested after a few good frosts. The beautiful feathery foliage from your mature carrots is a good addition to the compost pile, but first use them in your vase. They add to your beautiful arrangement.

Here's a website that talks about how this variety is currently in such demand. On her list of seeds for sale she has it marked Not Available:

Hey! What’s going on with the Oxheart carrot?! 5 years ago, NO ONE was paying any attention to this weird little heirloom vegetable. This spring, I have been inundated with orders/requests as never before, to the point that I am already sold out! I even sourced the web…sold out everywhere! Everyone is borrowing, trading and outright begging for some seeds! Indeed, in culinary circles for various chefs and busy kitchen cooks, this one has risen in the ranks as a popular favorite. Don’t think we saw this coming. So I pray that we have a great growing year, so the carrot seeds that I kept back will honor me with a great crop or it will be Domesday if the year does not deliver.

Here's another variety. One company that has this seed for sale is Piretree Garden Seeds. Their website is www.superseeds.com/. They have a lot of interesting seeds.

Prodigy
The Prodigy Carrot is a great carrot to use for juicing or in the kitchen in general. It can grow up to 10 inches long and weigh around 1-1/2 pounds. This carrot contains one of the highest amounts of vitamin A of any carrot we offer. It's roots are bright orange throughout.

We bought a carrot at the Farmer's Market in forest park a few weeks ago and that thing was about twice the size of a zucchini. I don't know what kind it was though...
