My BIL has a USB modem connected directly to his computer for internet service provided by AT&T DSL. He wants to install a wireless router - do you have to get one of the AT&T provided units ($100 on their web-site) or can any of you point me to something that will work with his current USB modem, effectively taking the place of the computer and allowing other devices to share the internet connection?

I brought two different wireless routers and neither worked with the ATT/DSL. I ended up having to get the one from ATT and having someone set it up for me. It was a real pain.

Not sure exactly how to set it up. But no you don't have to use an Att wireless transmitter. You can use any wireless router in conjunction with it. We used a linksys for years before we got an actual wireless dsl modem . It's a little easier to set up when it is one unit but the other works fine.

His best bet is to call ATT and ask them if they will swap his current modem for a standard ethernet modem (if they balk, tell him to say he is switching providers if they can't help him). At that point, he can use any wireless router he wants. If what ATT sends has wireless capability built in, it can easily be turned off.

I am assuming he is using Windows. Otherwise, I could easily set it up on Linux or FreeBSD using his current setup.

Thanks for that tip - I can do the ethernet side of it as long as the device provides it. Asking ATT to provide that will allow him to us a router that already have.

We have ATT DSL and we use a Netgear wireless router, never had a problem. Also, the Netgear was the easiest to set up. Good luck!

This is what we use. Wireles/router/DSL modem all built in. We don't use any of ATT's equipment.
