That is your opinion. And you're certainly entitled to it. I don't eat salt, I don't like it. My husband, on the other hand does. Who am I to tell him how to live his life ? Our lives are our own ... not yours, not the governments. Adults should be able to make educated decisions for themselves. Not from extremist .

I thought we were talking about KIDS.

As far as the school lunches, which is what this topic is about.....they're OPTIONAL!

Packing a lunch every day if you don't like the school rules is way less extreem than telling someone to homeschool who doesn't like school policies.

This one is an EASY fix!

Oh, and I work at a local middle school....kids are fat. Every year I'm shocked at how much bigger they're getting.

What we should be most worried about is sugar (not naturally found in fruit) and processed foods that are full of empty carbohydrates. Salt isn't making people fat. I grew up with parents who really had no idea about nutrition and was an overweight child. Once I learned about what is good for my body and how good it feels to exercise, I didn't want to go back to the way I had eaten and been growing up. Lately I have even been cutting out more sugar and simple carbs and feel even better and even lost a few more pounds to boot. So I have been on both sides of it. Just my opinion.

I heard somewhere that they are going to a carbohydrates type menu plan in the lunchroom in Feb or March 2012. This helps out not only the Diabetics that count their carbohydrates, but everyone else as well. Everything will be changing again, so be ready.

They have a new nutrition director at the board of education and she is trying to make the kids meals at school healthy meals. She is doing a great job. The main task in the nutrition department, is make the meal the children get from school a healthy one. There are kids at school, that don't have food in the home, so breakfast and lunch could be the only meals of the day they get.

Parents also need to be aware, if you have free or reduced lunch, that also means breakfast is included into the free or reduced price. So, if lunch is free, so is breakfast. I don't think a lot of parent relies. IF you have free/reduced meals, that means both breakfast and lunch, not just lunch.

Also, someone said something about the vending machines. The nutrition department has "nothing" to do with the machines, that is the schools property. Also, they "DO NOT" have anything to do with the slushies or ice creams sold in the lunchroom. IF you feel this is something that needs to be removed, the lunchroom/ nurtition dept "Can NOT" do anything about it, you must take that to the school principle. I see kids everyday use the lunch money, parents send, and eat ice creams and slushies instead of a healthy lunch. We "Can not" stop them from doing this, but you can.

/gets off her soap box.

I love my job and all the students. I would love to see each and everyone of them have the healthiest meal available to them.

I see the same thing, and I think to myself they never had a chance to be anything else.
Their parents don't understand how they got that way and the children don't either.
How many commercials for food say it taste good and it is good for you.

We eat what taste good and we believe we are fat because we eat too much food.
It is what we eat, the ingredients that turn small volumes of food into a power house of calories with more sugar, fat, and salt than our bodies can utilize.

Nutritional education is key, it should include measuring cups, spoons, and cardboard cut outs that show healthy amounts of certain foods, and it needs to start in first grade.

Kids will make their own better choices as they grow up.

I am with you on the vending machines, either take them out or replace them with refrigerated ones and put fresh fruit and veggie packs in them.

You are so correct, a serving size of pop tarts is not two pop tarts, its one. Since serving size is one pop tart, why does the company put two in a package. Look at the carb count on the pop tarts. OMG.. Same with the PBJ uncrushables.

Until I started working in the lunchroom, I really didn't know what most serving sizes where. Now, I have different size ice cream scoops in my house that I measure, serving sizing with, for my family. One serving size of mashed potatoes is only a 1/2 cup. Serving size for green beans is 1/2 cup. Look on the backs of your can goods and things you buy. The serving size is there. People would be surprised to see how much everyone over eats.

They will not do the fresh vegetables/fruits in the machines. The vegetables/fruits would go bad and wouldn't sale. They don't have a 2+ week self life like the machine companies like. You would gross out if you knew how long all that stuff is left inside those machines.

Salt - on a salad, Really?

You salt a salad every time you put dressing on it!

Isn't school lunch optional? How difficult would it be to make your kid's lunch every day if this is a problem?

Unless you receive free or reduced lunch.....

I'm guessing you didn't read everything I wrote. This is a high school kid - her choice as to whether to bring her lunch or not. She takes a salt packet each day to dress her salad. Let's all step back from the judgment table now.

We would all be better off if we didn't salt our food. There is so much salt already in the foods before we even take the first bite. Much healthier with no salt at all.

This may shock you, but we're not all the same. I actually have low blood pressure and am encouraged to use salt. I cook from scratch, though, using mostly fresh ingredients. Careful of advising what we all would be better off doing...I agree with the schools to season food to have a controlled amount. There would be H-E-double-toothpicks to pay if they stopped ALL salt!

The kids can always take salt to school if they really want to. Just remind them that is not the cafeteria staff that made this decision.

Salt is my favorite side dish. I salt amost everything except cold cereal or pancakes in the morning. If I don't taste salt, I don't have enough on my food. I don't cook with salt because my husband and son don't like it or even use it so I usually salt everything before I eat it. I can't imagine eatig any type of chicken without salt on it. I crave salt for some reason. I have tried the Morton lite salt and also No-Salt. I can't tolerate No-Salt - it has a bitter taste. Morton lite salt is ok and I don't really notice a difference. I have tried just using Mrs.Dash instead of salt but I eventually wound up putting Mrs. Dash AND salt on my food. The McCormick flavored pepper grinders are good because they contain some salt and it's just enough on some foods. My blood pressure is fine but I worry about my kidneys in the future. I. Love. Salt. :pardon:

This is all more of the same nanny state nonsense. It's what happens when elitists think they are smarter than you are, and suddenly believe they are qualified to tell you what to do, and how to do it. NO ONE in Washington, or anywhere else for that matter, will dictate to me what our children eat, but my wife and I!! That's that. Candidly, the merits of their arguments become secondary to MY rights as a parent.

One can make all the gripes about the evils of salt and fats, and carbs that one wants. Bottom line; NO SCHOOL will dictate to me , OR MY CHILDREN, what is acceptable. That's MY call, NOT Michelle Obama's.

Dictatorship at its best. This is the change we all wanted. I guess no one can think for themselves anymore...we have to have someone tell us what to eat...what to buy...even how to label our own products

Further, kids are not altogether too complicated. If it tastes like cr*p, they WON'T eat it. I don't blame them; I won't either! The problem with school lunches is, they've for the most part, tasted bad from time immermorial. Salt is one of the few things that make it palatable! Take THAT away, and most school lunch is nothing but an offense to the eyes, nose, and an unfortunate taste bud or 7. Wanna add more veggies & fruits? Go ahead; it doesn't take a genius to see where this will go. Kids will just throw out more food. That's what we ALL did in school, & that's what MY kids were doing with school lunches, and that's why we pack em at home now. Take 2% milk, for example; it's garbage! If I won't drink it, I sure won't expect my kids to drink it either. It's colored water. Wanna ruin a good bowl of cereal? Drop 2% on it.......

Actually most people have little or no education about food and nutrients that is not provided by food commercials.

Actually most people have little to no education about business, economics, tax rates, foreign affairs and such. Using your logic we should prevent anyone without the proper knowledge from “hurting” themselves and take away the privilege of voting.

Think about it a bit more before you push your nanny state ideals on everyone…

As far as I know schools are there for educational purposes, The only thing that I advocated for was healthier choices going into vending machines inside the school.
All of society pays as you well know when we accept predatory actions against the ignorant.
The bottom line is you owe just as much of the Gov. deficit as I do.
Your attitude won't stop you from being affected by it, think about that when you pay your taxes next time.

I do understand that the vending machines in the school are for profit, see how smart I am.
I also understand that the cost of $.99 hamburger actually cost the tax payer around $10, not because of the health issues but because my taxes subsidize a living for the industry's workers.
Hows that for being ignorant.
I understand plenty about the true cost of profit.
The state is bleeding to death through food programs that go in the trash if it is not junk food, and the school profits through junk machines.

That's hardly a "Nanny State" but it is a great spin on using your political ideology being pushed on everyone else.

The nature of school is to educate and I think you may need to return to school since public education is not where business, tax rates and anything beyond the most basic economics is taught. That comes afterwards. The salt mandate is to limit the amount of salt that kids are given so as to not be a danger to their health now, and they learn about lifelong nutrition.

That is why they are in school. An educated society is a better society.

You might want to know more about what you're talking about before you try to tell others what you don't know...
People. Planet. Profits. In that order.
