I failed to mention the wife does not work in Paulding County. For our county, the workdays begin next Monday.

The "against the law" verbiage, was a quote from the post that I responded to (which I quoted entirely in my post).

I'm just demonstrating the absurdity of some of the post in this thread by being absurd myself.

It is actually against the law for the employer to suggest in any way that you should work on a furlough day. They can not even said something like the "building will be open" or administration will be here from this time to this time.

We have already covered this one, but please feel free to show us the specific Georgia or federal statute that expressly prohibits a principal from stating that a school building will be open and/or occupied by administrators.

(Hint: There is none. Laws do not get into these types of things.)

There are many LABOR laws about furloughs. Just google it. GAE and PAGE told teachers that employers/principals can not make teachers feel guilty about not coming in on a furlough day. It's not really what the principal says but what is implied. And I really wasn't replying to YOU!!!

What's implied by letting staff know when the building will be open?

Furlough or not, I know MANY people who need time in their classrooms prior to preplanning and feel like they're having an "off" year otherwise. I'm not one of those people, but I would sure hate to think that the building wouldn't be open to me if I wanted to get a head start.

The principal may mean absolutely nothing by it, but some may take it that way. Last year we went around and around about working on furlough days. I just don't have the time or energy to go there any more. It is what it is and if teachers want to work for free that is there right. And I applauded them for giving of there time. And I am not being sarcastic I truly admire their dedication. And on the other side of the coin, it is perfectly ok for those who choose not work on furlough days as well. It is up to the individual.
