OK- so my son graduates this weekend from NPHS (yay), and while I understand the need for a dress code to keep kids looking nice, is it really necessary to specify the SHIRT COLOR?
I have no problem with the dress shoes, dark slacks and a tie, but for the love of God- white shirts dress shirts ONLY? What about the families barely making ends meet? Why can't they just wear a dress shirt in any color? It's not like the shirts will be seen under the gowns anyway...

I don't know why they would be doing that maybe they are wanting to start a tradition of sorts since this is the first graduating class. It could be symbolic in some way you may not be aware of . (shrug).

I think it's going to look really cool. Everyone in white shirts but adding their own personality with a cool tie or something.

I think if they are going this way that white is the best possible choice. Almost everyone has a white shirt or access to one.

Congrats on your son graduating!!

Actually, you can see the collar from the gown. If cost is a problem, Goodwill should have lots of white dress shirts for just a few bucks.

What color is the gown. The lighter ones show the color of the shirt underneath.

As Lisa said, you can always go to Goodwill or (probably) any thrift store and find a white shirt for a good price. IMO, every man should have at least one white dress shirt, anyway - call it an investment in his future for interviews. :)

Because that's the dress code for graduation.

It's not the "white shirt for everybody but my kid" rule.

My son was a dipcheeze and wore brown shoes to his graduation, KNOWING that he was supposed to wear black shoes! (thank you my Ex for allowing him to do that)
He almost didn't get to walk because of it!
Thank goodness his grandfather had on a pair of black shoes and wore the same size so they swapped out!
I STILL want to smack him (and the EX) for being such a dipcheeze!

you absolutely CAN see the shirt under the gown...the collar will be very visible.
Do like the other pcommer said and go to goodwill.

I wish the color of a shirt was all I had to stress about

My DS graduated from HHS in 2009 and they were told to wear white shirts only, with a dark tie and dark slacks with dress shoes. Their gowns were purple and the collars did show. It might be about having a uniform look for all the graduating class. I know I just bought a very inexpensive button up for him because I knew he would not wear a plain white one again.
So you're not from the South, that's okay, you got here as fast as you could.

We had dress codes for graduation back when I graduated in 1995. He only graduates once from high school. I would just enjoy the moment and not stress over purchasing a white shirt.

I'm sure that having to buy your son a white shirt is not the only stressor in your life right now but it's got to be one of the smallest. A lot of us understand how sometimes even $20.00 is hard to come up with. Also a lot of people would be so happy if their child was graduating from high school rather than dropping out or being involved in other things. Celebrate by getting him the shirt and telling him how proud you are. Congrats to your family.!

It’s been this way since the stone age! I graduated in 1984. We had a dress code. Girls were even required to wear white dresses only to the Baccalaureate service. White's not really my favorite color and it’s not very flattering on me. Quite frankly I would have worn blue but it never occurred to any of us to complain about it much less not comply. A white shirt with a collar is not asking for much.

thank you so much for the offer, but I can cover it. The purchase concern was more for the parents of some of my son's friends that I know CAN'T afford it.
but again- it was really nice of you to offer it! Thanks.

I agree it's been like this forever. My brothers graduated in the 70's and they had to wear white shirts. I graduated 1984 and the guys wore white shirts, the girls...white dresses. I graduated college in 1998, it was white. Nephews in the 90's - white shirts. And now my son this year, I knew it was going to be white. I'm having it tough too but managed to get the white shirt.

North isn't the only school. PCHS also is white shirt, dark slacks, and dress shoes.Have fun with it. Get him his white shirt but let him pick out a tie of his choice any color. My son picked out a bright Blue tie that he will never wear again but it was only 9.00 dollers at Ross. and a new white shirt was only 12.00. HAVE FUN!!!!

My son is graduating at SPHS. They have to wear black pants, black dress shoes, a white shirt and dark tie. If they are not dressed this way they will not be allowed to walk. Black tennis shoes are not acceptable.

You know what really irks me?

When kids don't have to (or have to) do something because a couple of families may not be able to afford it.

I call bullcheeze on it every.single.time.

Nice shoes, Sparky.

If they can't afford it they should just get on pcom. There's always somebody on here willing to help out when needed. Probably plenty of people with white shirts in their closets that they could donate.

I graduated in 1968 and it was the same........white shirts because they show and the girls wore white dresses.

It makes for a very nice picture.

And if someone really needed one I would get them one.

Goodwill has them for $5.

Yep, The white dress I wore for my graduation in 95 is hanging in my closet right now. I feel like crying everytime I look at it. I think it's a size 2. Was I ever really that skinny??? ugh.

White shirts are standard. The girls' gowns come with a white tape on collar. I know some high schools don't use them, but it's to make everyone look uniform. It REALLY looks bad when they don't.
