Does anyone know who is over this program now? I have some concerns and I would like to speak to whomever is in charge.

There are no more middle school sports, officially, anyway.

Yes there is middle school sports. They are not funded by the BOE at all, they are relying on booster clubs and parents. I may be wrong but I believe it is going to be a feeder program for the high schools.

That's correct, the high schools have taken over the programs and will have 6th-8th grade teams representing the high school. You still have to play for the school you are districted to though.

Which school are you looking for info about? Each school has different representatives to head the programs.

Right. There is no "one person" in charge. You will need to contact a PE teacher at the middle school or the high school coach. as I understand it.

That is our problem my son wants to play with the school he attends which we school choiced him to. He would like to play with his friends which makes sense, we will be selling our house before he goes on to high school and moving to the district we want him in. It doesn't make any sense to me to put him in a totally different school to play ball when he could
just play at the school he attends.

So are you gonna school choice the high school? Wherever he is currently school choiced to is where he needs to play, that's the rules they are wanting to abide by.

the current rules in place is your child plays for the school they are districted to attend. It doesn't matter if you are choice county employee whatever. That is the way it was set up for this year for all sports

We plan on moving to the district we have him school choiced too before high school. So of course he wants to play for the school he attends. We may just have to take him out of county to play, I am so irritated with youth sports out here.

Why do they want them to play for a school they don't attend?

if your child is in middle school how can you be certain they will be approved at a different high school at this time?

Since this happened so quickly and there were many out there that didnt support this it is true, there isnt a 6th grade team. The Raider Nation park has the program for those who attend schools in this district. Now i am told that it will change next year and there will be 6th thru 8th grade teams in this feeder pattern and they will play teams out of county but for now its in county. It's still new and im sure changes will be made. Games are on sat's and im sure you could get more answers from the parents there. Good luck.

I don't see what there is to be irritated with, this is something new and it will be very good for the county. So you would rather go put them in a Rec league elsewhere? All 5 Paulding schools have joined the Cobb County Junior Basketball League with 35 other schools from Cobb, Cherokee, and Fulton. It's the top Middle school basketball league in the state with great competition. It's going to improve the play of basketball in the county tremendously than just playing other Paulding Schools like they have been doing in middle school.

I've already been told of the rules, wherever you are districted to or school choiced to is where you play, if you are school choiced to the district of the high school you are wanting to go with anyways then I don't see the problem. That's where you will play.

Has anyone heard of rules....this is what it is and should be followed. Evidently Cobb and other counties have been succesful....so either join in or move to a rec ball where there are rules also. Give these parents credit for wanting to help...The BOE just left them out in left field......

That is the same thing we were told to begin with, if he is school choiced there then he can play for that school, then we got a phone call last night telling us he can not play there because he is not in that district.

I am not trying to make anyone mad or cause a problem, I am just trying to understand why they would want him to play for the school he doesn't attend? I know we have to pay to play so maybe they could charge those of us from another school district a fee on top of registration or something?

I am very thankful for the parents that have stepped up and tried to do something, I am one of those parents who wants to help make this happen for the kids but from what I was told it is not the parents who are making this decision. I do know there are rules in rec ball as well, we have been playing rec ball for years.

From what I understand the rules are set county wide....just like a model from Cobb...and I know that will make some mad...Have to start somewhere....I think it is a great program. Some will like it and some will not....it will probably take a couple of years to get the kinks out.....

When you fill out the papers for school choice it clearly states that you are not allowed to participate in extra curricular activities because you do not live in the district. I don't understand why there is confusion here. What am I missing?

But this activity has nothing to do with the school, remember the board cut the funding for it.

I think if you school choice, you cannot play for that school. It prevents one school from having an advantage over another by school choicing (is that a word?) the best athletes. It's been that way for a long time. I know things are different now but it makes sense to prevent stacking teams.

Those people were called "slaves".

I just have to say that we are very happy with the East Paulding 7th/8th grade football teams. I was concerned that it would be chaos and seriously considered putting my son back in rec for one more year. Boy am I glad that we didn't. These kids are being trained right from the start how to play like they'll be expected to play in high school. It's going to provide a much smoother transition for these boys. If your child is serious about playing high school level sports I'd jump at the chance to get on these feeder teams. I've seen some of the high school coaches at several of the middle school games on Saturdays. I told my son they were "scouting"! This put a little fire under him!

For such short notice I think all of the county schools stepped up and got things rolling. I hope all sports will be handled as well as football has been. I even saw some signs out for 8th grade feeder team baseball which is new to me. There never has been middle school baseball as far as I know.

Do understand though that this is not rec ball. There is no guaranteed playing time. The best play. Period. End of discussion. Don't bother the coach with it. This is how it will be in high school though so best to get used to it now I guess.

Oh, I wasn't directing that at you, just a general observation. It's been a tough one for me to get used to. My son came from rec ball where he played offense and defense, very rarely sitting the bench. He's second string right now, but LOVES it! He gets to play several different positions which has been good for him to get out of his comfort zone. Dear old mom here of course thinks her baby should be a starter and I've had to come to terms with the fact that he's not. As long as he's happy though I'm learning to be happy :)

Best of luck with getting your son in the school you want him to play for. I really think the new programs are going to be much better than what we had.

These rules pertain to school sponsored sports and fall under ghsa rules. Don't believe the feeder teams are under ghsa.

Perhaps I should have said "Come to terms with the fact that he is not a starter YET!" He'll get there one day! As soon as I can stretch him out and fatten him up :D

Lets see last year we have 1 Div 1 player sign, there is one committed this year...oh I forgot every kid is a D 1 prospect. Folks, let the kids play and remember the NCAA commercial about being in a JOB, that is not sports related. I think they call it an education.

I agree very, very much with your statement! I've always told my kids that sports are the icing on the cake of their life. Education comes first and foremost. But, football is so much fun and it never hurts to dream big :) I harbor no delusions that my skinny little guy is going pro. It's just fun to talk about with him and see how passionate he gets about playing. Hopefully the lessons of hard work and determination he is learning from football will transfer to success in life.

My middle school son told me he hopes to play through high school at least and then become an agent so he can let the other guys beat themselves up while he takes 40%! Pretty smart kid!

I agree it never hurts to dream big! My kids work hard on and off the field, they know education comes first but if they want to dream of making it to the pros who am I to say they won't??

I have a 7th and 8th grader who have been looking forward to trying out for the team but it is just to pricey for us. The meeting I attended said the cost would be $200 a player. One coach also mentioned keeping the uniform cost down while another made it sound like they might include the top. On top of that they mentioned fundraising. Add all that together plus the gate cost to get in for our family (of 5) and I am looking at a whole lot of Moola for my 12 and 13 year old to play basketball. I think I will be signing my 3 kids up for rec ball this year and just praying I don't have to be on 3 sides of the county at the same time too often~~lol. That way I can start saving up now for next year.

Taking out the money aspect it does sound like it is going to be a great program.

My son told me that about the basketball fee! Ouch! That is a lot. Football was $175 plus we had to buy cleats and practice pants. Also the $5 per person gate fee for our four every weekend. It was actually about $30 cheaper than when we played rec. ball though. But when my daughter played middle school basketball and soccer we didn't have to pay the fee. We just bought sweatshirts with their name/number and of course paid to get in the games. That's the only drawback I see in the programs. The cost will shut out some kids, but then they might work with families that have more than one child playing to get the costs down.

Have they already had meeting and/or tryouts? I asked both my kids and they have heard nothing about this and I haven't been able to find anything on any school site. I know these aren't officially run by the school, but I wish they would advertise them better. It was by pure chance we found out about softball.

taxpayers paid almost $300,000 for middle school programs....still have to sell candy and pay to get in games....folks, it will still cost to run over the county for rec ball. It is a price...paid for mine...and will continue...as long as they do something...I guess TV and computers would be your free option....
