Actually, the votes are cumulative and are displayed on your profile (green box just down from the top) ... at least for the admin view.

I set the ratings visible on a per post basis and I assume the rating points are otherwise visible in cumulative numbers in your profile.

One option available is to set the ratings invisible.

I'm not sure that I agree with you, Pubby. I think that a rating system will not encourage "good posts", but rather discourage thought-filled ones. We already have emoticons that people use instead of putting their thoughts into actual words. Now, people won't even bother with the emoticons - They'll just rate others, depending on whether they agree or disagree with them.

I think that the notion that using this system to encourage "good posts" is a specious one because the critical-thinking skills required for analysis are often viewed as unpopular. Bad posters, or the ones with a very narrow (or singular) agenda can be easily regulated through banishment to protected-forum purgatory. Attempts to escape from purgatory to the general population of -- Internet Cafe -- for instance, leads to banishment to PCOM Hell.

If you want to get really John Miltonish, you can have several levels of hell before complete and utter permanent Hell.
they're displayed in the profile of the individual as well.

setting them invisible....wouldn't that negate the whole process? if no one can see the rating, why have the rating system? your call.

but hey, can you look in to the possibility of a feature that allows the user to click on their rating in their profile, and see which posts they were rated on?
kinda like the mayberry/bullet, click on it and see why it was issued?

I don't often agree with you but this is a good post. I think freedom of speech on this board could cease and political correctness could rear it's ugly head. Paying members might just stop visiting if they were made invisible simply because others disagreed with them.

it only goes for a post at time, if someone likes your post then they can give you a plus in your rep.

if someone does not like your post then they can vote - on it

I get that part...but what happens? Do you get a bullet if you get too many negative? Do you get a mayberry if you get a bunch of positives? Is there an awards ceremony at the end of the year?

Here's what I see happening, when pcommers get in a pissing match, people are going to be able to say, "You see, So and so made the post go off the cliff because she has the most negative rep points in the thread". It's just going to be used as additional ammunition. The negative points will eventually be worn as a badge of honor...to hide the sadness.

And then there's people like me that would have never even noticed...Can I make my counter look like a fetus? Jus' wonderin'.

It is something that came with the new board that we're experimenting with.

I honestly don't know how it will work ...

What I do know is that given the options, we're open about it; second, it tends to work in larger diverse communities (we are) and it does nothing if everyone sets their 'viewing' to show all posts. If you set your viewing to hide posts from those whose reputation scores are -30 or more, you'll have to click on their post to view it.

I'm not 'pushing this down the community's throat anymore than I will engage the 'facebook' integration (another option made possible) because everyone on facebook uses their real names and as such, the 'anonymity' will likely fade.

Considering the number of 'votes' that exists amongst the 3 percent of users who are 'addicts' vs. the 50 percent that are more modest users, the dynamic I see is that the reputation will be set more by those folks and I'm kind of curious how they feel.

I can also see how we could zero everyone out on the number of votes they can give on the negative side (like it was before I made the change last night) and only allow positive votes. There could be 'negative days' and 'positive days' ... and again, this is all an experiment that obviously includes those who are members.

I believe, I set it up so that you can vote for yourself, too!

pubby

PS: The idea is this is the user moderation system. This has nothing to do with the mods, mayberries and bullets and shouldn't ... although if we don't ditch the system, you may be able to cash in mayberries for reputation points.

I actually like the option, myself. I know there will be many who don't, however.
Leaves it up to the individual, what content they view.

As with any rating system, stars, points, trophies, reputation, confidence, etc...
the vocal ones with strong opinions will usually suffer the wrath of those with equally
vocal and strong, but opposing opinions... and there's lots of vocal, opinionated folk to go around pcom.

I'm interested to see what kind of balance develops, myself, if it's continued for long enough.
(Due to lurkers who never post, but may be perfectly willing to click an anonymous rating button)

I agree with NC-17 and the others on this. In addition, I think it will scare off new members. I think that as a newbie, some might be afraid to post or join in on thread as it is. I know I was at first b/c I was new and didn't want to tick anyone off to begin with at the very least, but mostly because no one really knew me.

I know I don't have many posts as it is, but I have been here long enough now to know that it will turn into a bad thing for the site, either by deterring new people from the site or making current members leave. (If I am understanding this correctly). Besides, everyone has an opinion, and there will always be someone to disagree no matter what it is.

Here is another idea ...

Maybe we do the post rating for the regular members and opt out the paid members?

I mention that because I suspect it will get spur a little conversation ... and since the paid members seem to be among those most concerned ... such an approach could mitigate in their opinion. You know it now becomes a 'not in their back yard' as opposed to not in my back yard.

pubby

Again, this is an experiment, let me know what's going on.
