Pcom found the right page and instituted the user-driven reputation system.

All members will have a minimum of four votes - two positive and two negative - which they may 'cast' every day to say what kind of site they really, really want.

You cast these votes by clicking on the the little +/- at the right bottom of every post.

If you like news, click on the person who starts an engaging news topic. If you find snarky gossip not your cup of tea, pass out a negative vote on that post/topic.

These scores are compiled and user ratings will arise.

This, I might add, is an experiment and if I get the idea of an organized effort to attack any single poster, I reserve the right to fix the system, adapt the system or if need by, ditch the system.

I will offer this prediction in an effort to encourage those involved to avoid it ... I predict that if there is a battle to loom, it is there and the end result is that both sides will destroy the reputation of the other making those members posts invisible throughout the site.

I do know there are a some protected groups ... admins, mods, law enforcement but for the most part, at least at this point, the reputation system is pretty broad.

Again, as we go through time we may choose to opt out other paid member levels but at this point, we'll see what we'll see in an experiment that I enter with some trepidation.

I like it, but someone will end up abusing it.

What are the effects of receiving mostly negative votes?

but the votes don't count towards the "topic". they count towards the "post" of the individual "poster".

and if i'm reading correctly, you say that a bad rep will set the members "posts" invisible throughout the whole site?

"you can't please everybody." and by your words, pissing off a few will disable the majority from reading anything you write.

effectively, you've given the minority the means to vote their enemies off the island.

i'm off to forge "alliances"!!!!

I think the admins should just go all they way and require each person to be personally interviewed by the Power to determine if they are fit to post here before they are ever granted the extreme privilage of doing so. It it pretty much headed in the direction of an exclusive club where the few control everything and fredom of speech is dead. Much like the current government administration.

We just get "random" votes to cast everyday? Everyone can see if you have 5 positives or negatives?? Can we see who gave them to us or have to except a negative with no way to respond? Do the votes follow us post to post? So say I tick someone off with one thing I write in one topic, they give me a negative, then I go to prayers wanted topic, post, will it show there too?
Yikes, I am with NC on this...better form alliances.

and that, i wouldn't have so much of a problem with.

i've always had the clear understanding that this*is* a privately owned board, which throws the 'freedom of speech' argument right out the window. no one has freedom of speech in my house, if i don't like what you're sayin' you'll be invited to leave. perfectly understandable for pubby to take the same approach. understanding that his moderators and administrators are his proxies, i get the whole bullet and mayberry approach.
again, this is not made a secret when one joins this board. it's not a democracy here. it's privately owned property (theoretically speaking, and no one has any "rights" to speak of. posting here is definitely a "privilege".

what i'm leery of is the mob mentality that tends to form on this board. take me for example. i'm known for caustic and/or smartass remarks. i'm also know for a lot of community outreach. let 14 people decide they're sick of my snarkiness, and you've taken away the community's opportunity to benefit from any good i could ever possibly do here.
we already have the report button to use when rules are broken. bullets and mayberries are the board owners way to deal with infractions and also good deeds.
stars are the old way we've handled our personal likes and dislikes of individual posters.
this new reputation feature could potentially allow the biggest unpopularity contest imaginable. the consequence? having all of your posts set invisible throughout the board. not at the hands of the owner or mods (for rule infractions), but at the hands of whatever mob you piss off. and for no other reason than pettiness and cattiness.

"power to the people" comes with great responsibility. i'm afeared that the masses may not be able to use it wisely.

i'm not quite sure how this will work in terms of "folowing you from post to post"

what i've already noticed this morning, and i'm not sure if you can see it too, is that my first post in this topic has a green 1 at the bottom. when i click on my profile, it says my reputation is a green 1.
however, that the green 1 doesn't appear on the other posts i've made in this topic.
this leads me to believe that you can tell which post you've gotten rated on, individually.

again, i don't know if this is something that only i, meaning the recipient of the rating, can see, or if it's visible to the whole board.

i'm glad to know that someone rated my post as positive. i don't think there's a way for me to find out who, but thank you.

what would be nice is if you could click on your reputation status in your profile and be shown which posts are rated. i don't know if that's possible or enabled. i'llhafta do some clicking around to find out.

(haha! "clicking around" makes me sound like a loose internet user!!!)

anyway. it's possible that without the feature mentioned above, it would be very difficult to figure out which posts of yours were rated what, unless you spend the time to go through every thing you've written to check, every time your rating changes on your profile.

i'm off to "click around"! :dirtygiggle:

interesting... NC I see your positive votes, on the post that you were voted for.

they do not show up on every post just the ones that you were voted on .

I will have to do some checking in on this also.

I feel this could lead to trouble.

if it is abused. I have a feeling this will not last long.

I'm pretty much in agreement with all the responding posts to the original topic, posted by Pubby. This is something that could very well be "abused."

If a post or topic is inappropiate, then reporting it to the Moderators, is much more appropiate. The Moderators are much more likely to be in a neutral position to decide, whether to leave the post or topic "as it is," "remove it," or make it invisable.

Really don't want to see things turn ugly, in the sense of someone "thinking to themselves.....hey, I don't like this person, so I'll give them a negative," even though it doesn't have anything to do with the topic / post.

Also, I can see this as being vindictive towards P.com members who do a lot of good in the community, as well as toward business members....bascially "ganging up" on these people, for no valid reason.....we all know how "personality conflicts" can be.

interestingly enough, i can see that one of the green 1s from a previously positive rated post has been removed. which means to me that one person likes it and one doesn't. fair enough.
(this makes for interesting strategy. instead of having to look for a post to disagree with, one can simply look for a post that someone else liked, and negate that vote. sneaky!!!)
it's gonna be hard to keep up with which posts my reputation rating is reflecting.
I was hoping that by clicking in the green reputation box in my profile it would show a listing of which posts have been rated what, but alas, no joy.
this is gonna be a new game for me. scrolling through all of my posts at the end of the night to see what's been rated.
or, i may just throw caution to the wind and decide that it simply 'is what it is', and quit worrying about what folks are thinkin' about me.
only time will tell. :)

I think this is similar to what they do on "peopleofwalmart.com.". I know most people are familiar with that site, (hilarious!!!) but some don't notice that there are comments for every photo. You can read the comments, and have the opportunity to like or dislike a comment. If the dislikes far outweigh the likes, the comment is "invisible". You CAN still read it though, you just have to click on it. In that case, it keeps the dumb comments off the board. But you can still read them if you wish.

I don't know how this will work on here... Not quite as simple as commenting on a photo.

from what i can tell by playing with it some this morning..... there's no commenting about it. nothing to read but a number. it's just a click of a + or -, and no way to tell who clicked it.
it would be nice if we could click our reputaion rating on our profile and be able to tell which posts were rated, but i don't see that function enabled as of right now. (if it ever can be)
it's driving me a lil bit nutty to not know what i've been rated on unless i go look at all of my posts.

I think that anyone who signs up for an account should have to verify who they are in the system. It shouldn't be public info, but it should be something in the system. That way if anyone makes threats or makes inflammatory comments, then the admins could determine who the person is and appropriate actions could be taken. And, it would get rid of all those criminal geniuses who simply bounce from laptop to desktop to post under multiple names. (You know who you are!)

If someone is being stalked, then the admins need to be able to pull accurate info about the stalker and provide it to the proper authorities. NEVER should that info be public, postings can still be anonymous. This is simply a safety measure. IP addresses don't cut it.

I thought this board was for getting help and giving help when needed from fellow pcommers. There is so much judging in today's society the way it is. I am constantly talking to my ninth grade son about being true to himself and not worrying about comments from other high schoolers. I would think that you could come on this board and listen to and discuss others opinions. I enjoy coming on here and seeing opinions that are different from mine.

i've always had the clear understanding that this*is* a privately owned board, which throws the 'freedom of speech' argument right out the window. no one has freedom of speech in my house, if i don't like what you're sayin' you'll be invited to leave. perfectly understandable for pubby to take the same approach. understanding that his moderators and administrators are his proxies, i get the whole bullet and mayberry approach.
again, this is not made a secret when one joins this board. it's not a democracy here. it's privately owned property (theoretically speaking, and no one has any "rights" to speak of. posting here is definitely a "privilege".

what i'm leery of is the mob mentality that tends to form on this board. take me for example. i'm known for caustic and/or smartass remarks. i'm also know for a lot of community outreach. let 14 people decide they're sick of my snarkiness, and you've taken away the community's opportunity to benefit from any good i could ever possibly do here.
we already have the report button to use when rules are broken. bullets and mayberries are the board owners way to deal with infractions and also good deeds.
stars are the old way we've handled our personal likes and dislikes of individual posters.
this new reputation feature could potentially allow the biggest unpopularity contest imaginable. the consequence? having all of your posts set invisible throughout the board. not at the hands of the owner or mods (for rule infractions), but at the hands of whatever mob you piss off. and for no other reason than pettiness and cattiness.

"power to the people" comes with great responsibility. i'm afeared that the masses may not be able to use it wisely.

***not a gripe, but a concern***

I am in total agreement with you. I have loved pcom but I am a NewsJunky. The very nature of the news is often upsetting and most of my posts center around it. I guess I will end up toast!

Don't worry, there are a handful that will stand by your bullying no matter what your pcom rating says!

 Me too. I just tried to add to your reputation MrsH but it said, "Action failed. You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day".

Those people were called "slaves".

Here's what I think. I think this reputation system has nothing whatsoever to do with good posts or active participation. I think it is a backdoor opportunity for anonymous, petty vindictiveness. Same with the stars.

There are people on this board who stopped reading the content of my posts long ago -- they just react viscerally to my name and that's it. I could say the sky is blue and that would be reason enough for them to pick at a scab somewhere and off we go again.

I don't mind if some people don't like me. I don't always like everyone else, either. That's par for the course for human beings - I'm not for everyone and I can live with that.

But the idea that a few people can cause me to be publicly labeled here as having a "negative reputation" or otherwise get me classified as substandard as a participant... because of some personal friction or opposition to an opinion... well, I don't much like the idea. I can take my lumps, but I prefer to do it in the forum where I can respond and let the exchange of ideas speak for itself, rather than as a context-less label on my profile.

That is all.
