So my son just turned 7 and he has the million dollar mouth. If it's not one thing in his mouth costing me $ it's another. Well now after several trips to the Ortho, who we are very happy with, they say he needs 2 spacers put in. One on top, which my insurance will pay for to hold the spot for his adult tooth to come in. We had the molar pulled, after it was capped and still needed to be removed. And they say he needs one on the bottom to hold a space for an adult tooth that we had to have pulled 9 months ago. Yes, an adult tooth, it was discolored, mis-shaped, and wouldn't erupt all the way that caused him constant pain and discomfort. My insurance will not pay for this one and it's over $400.00.
So anyone gone through anything similar? I asked my insurance co. if we had left the painful tooth in, would they have payed for it and they said yes. I'll never when with them....Delta Dental sux... But now I'm left not knowing what to do and am not 100% convinced spacers are needed. Then I googled it and people posted how badly the spacers hurt their kids....
Funny you should bring this up. I just had to take dd to dentist yesterday for tooth pulled and a spacer put in with additional sealents. She said it did hurt and is still complaing of pain but she said that the spacer got stuck on her mouth so her mouth hurt. I don't know about long term. They told us that her adult tooth would not be in for a year or two so she will have to wear it until then. I think the thing is funky looking. It is just a metal retangle looking thing that food can get on their gum. I guess when her gum heals it will not be a big deal but she cant brush that area yet and that makes me concerned. Anyhoo, I guess I have no answer for your question but I am glad I did it b/c I was afraid that her teeth would crowd together and then I would have more expensive problems down the road when her big tooth comes in. Good luck with whatever you decide.
PS. On a funny note.....she thought she would get money from the tooth fairy. lol. I told her that the tooth fairy does not give money for teeth you did not take care of cause she can't use them.
Hopefully, she will learn to brush when I tell her to from now on.
