Need some help, hopefully I'm was given wrong information. I've been told that because of failing 2 grades, Dobbins middle school has a running back who will be turning 16 before the play offs begin. I hope this is false informatin, but does anyone know? If it's true, how is it allowed to happen?

I could see that happening..My youngest son has a kid in his grade (6th) who is 14 years old...He would be playing football next year if he chooses. My 9th grader is only 3 weeks older than this child.

I can see that happening - it's going to be because the kid has an early birthday in the year and has failed on grade. Since you say he's turning sixteen before the playoffs, I'm going to assume he's 15 now.

If he's 15 now - he was fourteen in 7th grade, 13 in sixth grade, 12 in fifth grade. The early birthday kids in fifth grade do turn 11 in fifth grade. So, if he failed on grade in there - it would make sense that he could be sixteen and playing middle school football.

I'd be curious to find out who this is. I sub over there all the time and have been on just about all the teams. They have a nice bunch of kids - there are the standard mouthy kids and attitude kids, but in general, I've been very impressed.

I found this on the Athletics section of our School system web site. The middle school part:

A. Age Limitation: A student may not turn 16 years old prior to the last scheduled event of the season. A team that consist of only 7th grade players a student can not turn 15 years old prior to the last scheduled event of the season. However he or she could play on the 8th grade team

I suppose that the age of the child isn't the biggest concern here. (Whether or not the child shaves twice a week, or has a drivers license couldn't possibly affect his ability to play sports.)
I suppose that the size/weight of the child would be what the parents would have them most objections to. (Rational thinking would lead to believing that because the child is older than his classmates, he must be bigger, heavier, or more physically developed.)
Are there any height/weight guidelines written for the children who fall within the appropriate age category?

Weight/size requirements are only for Rec Ball. For Middle and High school, there are not any weight / size restrictions.

I would call or email the coach with your concerns....I'm sure you can find his info on the website. biggrin.gif

My husband watched the Dobbins/McClure game & he said that this kid you are talking about was as big or bigger than him & he is not a small man.

Wow! That is a tough one. What if he was held back in first grade or along time ago. I am not sure it is right to punish him for mistakes made in the past. Kids these days are big. I know an 8th grader who is 6'2'' and weighs 200 lbs. He is a young 8th grader too becuase he skipped a grade... I could see the concern that he might hurt other kids on the field, but just because of age???? That is a tough one...

According to what i've heard, he will turn 16 before the football playoffs begin: in less than 2 weeks

All you have to do is contact the Coach or the Athletic director to verify instead of speculating. wink.gif

I would think it would also be his 2 failing classes. If you are failing more than 1 class you are not allowed to play school sports.

My suggestion would be to played REC ball, this will not get any better in high school, so move over to the REC side...you probably should have been aware of this when starting....just think...a freshman could technically play against a senior in high school....

I know the Coach at Dobbins personally, and I can assure you that he would not go against County Policy. This is most likely incorrect information regarding this particular player in question.

His birthday is in 08 before school lets out...and he is eligible

Coach Wilson would not play an illegal player, it's just not worth it.
